    Network Managment System

    Hi all,

I have been tasked by my boss to look at documenting the network design and infrastructure. We have around 20 seperate sites, and on some of the sites, there are a number of fibre links, and cabs with switches etc. Most of our support is done over the phone, so being able to tell a user to 'check the lights on the middle switch' for example would really help.

I was thinking of building a web application in PHP and MySQL to try and do this. Users would be able to 'drill down' by site, then by location, and then look at pictures and diagrams etc for that specific location.

Do people think this is a bit overkill, or has anyone seen a system like this before?

    Thanks again

not overkill in my opinion, however it may be difficult to update unless you have dedicated people on each site and have people who keep tabs on all pieces of equipment.

Its not going to be for client PCs really. Just mainly for the core infrastructure, which does not really change to be honest?!

Racksmith looks interesting. Have you used it? It seems like they are developing a new version?

Just watched a screencast on racksmith, and it looks perfect for what we need. Shame the new version is not ready yet?!
