So, surely if this special offer is years old it should be less than £5,000 for about 200 licenses?

I've always questioned the extreme pricing involved with this product - does anyone think they are getting value for money ?

    Re: Securus

I have been trialing this "box" for 2 months now and I am still not sure, I admit that I have not seen pricing as high as that mentioned earlier (our is around the £2800 one off with a 20% annual fee for support) but it does take some tweeking to getrid of the false positives that is for sure.

I intend to keep trailing it for another 2 weeks and then make up my mind.

I suppose if it was actuallt catching students violating the AUP, just get low end swearing in emails, then I could possibly justifythe cost but at themoment I am finding it hard to bring myself to part with £3000 nowing I have other more "pressing" needs.

Who will have the final say in your school ? The reason I ask is that they are very keen sometimes to by-pass the NM or ICT Tech and go straight for the head / SMT.

    @Mattx:

That tactic has already been used, it is thier kind of hard sell.

The good news is Ihave the final say, as I report directly to the head and he respects my thoughts and opinons they generally go with them, I am also the controller of the ICT budget.

    Re: Securus

There is also a slightly different way to use Securus. In our school, we have a few self harmers. Some of these use a forum called Ihurtmyself now the immediate instinct is to block that sight but actually we set Securus to log every visit to that sight then any concerning posts and the names of all who use it goes to the child protection person in the school.

Good way of using it but there is a cheaper way of doing that.

Of course but it still does all its normal stuff as well such as catching people who try using these proxies to get to Bebo.

Well for a start your proxy would log these site hits I should think. I've trialled it but again the cost was high and our need isn't lol. If i becomes apparent that we need something like this then I may decide to change my mind.

Local or remote Cache, history either from local or remote cache or proxy server etc etc. On our box we can run reports for specific users or sites etc.

Getting back to Securus, I am wondering how many SMTs / heads have actually fallen for the tactics they use and also how many have actually gone over the NM / ICT Tech actual advice....

Infact, as the site in question is an Invasion Power board based forum, it's quite easy. You could grep your logs for people invoking the reply form and just pull that data.

    Code:
    grep ihurtmyself.*act.post /var/log/dansguardian.log > ~/ihurtmyself_postings.txt

Of course you can improve on this examples with sed, awk and friends to get something a little neater (maybe even pulling the urls automatically with imagemagik or lynx and doing some post processing).

    Re: Securus

But with Securus we get a screen shot showing what they wrote. Including any PMs. Great for child protection.
