Software Deployment Via GPO - HELP!
Hi,
Busy setting uo my test server. Created a OU group in Active Directory and Assigned two computers to this OU including a user.
I assign a .msi package via creating a new Group Policy called 'Deploy Maths Games' and assigned it is the KS1 OU group (where the user and other machine name exists). It set the policy as number 1 (order of prority), but nothing happens on the client side. They see their mapped network drive etc.
The same goes for customising their user config. For example, prohibt access to Control Panel. This does not take effect?
Am I missing something vital on my test system.
Any help would be great
Robert

Did you assign the package per Computer or User?
Have the group 'Domain Computers' got access to the network area that the msi package is being deployed from?
Are you 100% sure the msi software package is deployable?
Have you checked the event log on both the server and client?

Also check your DNS settings, it took me a while to figure out why Group Policy wasn't working on my test network - I had the DNS settings pointing at my broadband router rather than the server. As soon as I changed that it all worked fine!

Ok you need to set your DNS on your clients to point to the IP of your server so they get a DNS of 192.168.0.200, with a gateway of 192.168.0.1. On your server you can then set the forwarders to the DNS Server of your ISP as you have in your router. That should work if I remember it all correctly (im not a DNS god it has taken me a few goes to get it right before!)

Re: Software Deployment Via GPO - HELP!
Hi All,
Many thanks for the advice. Got DNS all up and running okay
So I have made quite good gains on researching our new network . I can now deploy packages to client machines, as well as customising Windows interface (disable access to certain features).
Do you think I have made good progress so far to deploy a new network myself without the use of RM and Ranger?
Just need to sit down and work out group policies for staff, students & guests!
Also, anybody recommend some good MSI building software?
Thanks
Robert

depends how confident you are. I started last year rolling out pc's without the network management software we use. i set up my own gpo's and used folder redirection. Another plus point is the fact that we saved our school money on licencing. Vanilla windows environment google searches provide more hits than if i type an error code and the name of the network management software we use.
From a personal point of view if i move on the chances of finding the network management software schools tend to use in commerce is rare.

Re: Software Deployment Via GPO - HELP!
Great
I take it setting up GPO's take the most time?
Also, do I store apps, and user data on seperate servers ?
I feel, with RM / Ranger, their is more to go wrong, where by if you use standard windows tools, you have more chance of software being comptaible.
Does anybody know where I can get .msi packages on standard tools used with windows. For example, Adobe Reader, quicktime, realplayer?
Regards
Robert

The best place to look for most of this has to be http://www.appdeploy.com/.
It has been a lifesaver to many people.
Due to the legal implications of redistribution of software (just read some of the blurb pur into EULAs) EduGeek.net cannot host or link to pre-built MSIs of most commercial / closed source packages I am afraid ...
