    Securus

    Afternoon all,

Just had a sales call from Securus, fairly standard call would you like to trial our product for a month etc etc. Politely informed the saleslady that we wouldn't have the funds for something like this for some time due to our summer reinstallation that took place last summer plus our council do our web filtering for us, and that although I believe Securus to be a good product I wouldn't want to waste their time by taking a box off them for a month knowing in advance that I would not be purchasing.

    Her response surprised me somewhat.....

Apparently there is a Government requirement to have an e-safety system in place that provides the functionality that securus does (such as monitoring kids for work they do in school, ie monitoring words typed into documents as opposed to just filtering their web access), within the next 18 months......

Now is this right? Or is she just pushing a hard sale? Has anyone else heard of some government requirement for this?

She's pushing the hard sell. As long as you're safeguarding the pupils online you're fine. BUT this thread may be of interest:Turn the filters off and use Securus as that is the way OFSTED seem to be leaning. This week.

    See here.

We didn't go for securus, we went for one of their competitors, mainly due to price.

Nice one, thanks for that. That's what I assumed, but she really wouldn't take a "no I'm not interested" for an answer.

We are covered online at least as, as mentioned in the op, the council does our filtering and monitoring for us which I had assumed would cover us for esafety (certainly at its lowest level anyway).

Once we took the initial "hit" on buying Securus, it was worth the money.

It enabled one girl to obtain specialist councilling for a problem that she was having, because I saw what she was writing... That has to be worth the money!

Must admit our place has been twitchy over this, we already teach a unit about E-safety as part of the DIDA course so all our Year 9 students get this module taught by the ICT Teachers, we use Smoothwall for filtering our Internet Connections (Both the LEA Provided and our Secondary one) which is a fully BECTA accredited solution so that keeps the pr0n away etc so we hope that we will come off fine with those angles, but I do know our Vice Principal is going perhaps we should be buying X as I had a flyer saying Ofsted like X and say its meets the E-Safety ideas etc

Running both Smoothwall and Securus here. Securus is a great product and works like it says on the tin. It's been great for paper trailing back to incidents and bringing them in for a 'chat' about their behaviour on the schools PC's.

Securus is different from Smoothwall though. It does not filter the internet for you. It monitors what words are typed into the keyboards etc. Some funny stuff comes up on it though.

We went for this one. It was alot cheaper - however securus is a hardware appliance, whereas the one I went for is a software solution so that could be why. The software came last week, and I've been off this week, so I can't tell you about setting it up as it's still in the box
