If you have a Linux box handy, you can use kbarcode.
kbarcode.net: Home
Just to wave the MLH flag a bit more.
It's easy to install and setup. Oz was great at helping me iron out a few issues and quick to respond. I also had a chat with OZ at BETT2009 on Thursday and I am really looking forward to the asset management and barcode being added to MLH.
Slightly off topic, but has anyone got a recomendation for a wireless / bluetooth barcode scanner. Cheers.

Datalogic QuickScan Mobile
Doesn't seem too bad, allthough I presume you need to move through the helpdesk to the correct part to scan/enter the barcode that wireless may or may not help, allthough I suppose it still beats wrapping a wire everywhere.
We have a keyboard wedge type one in the library so I'm going to test with that for now and then budget for another scanner.

hmm just found this one as well:
Motorola / Symbol Technologies CS1504 Cordless Barcode Scanner
You can scan up to 150 and then download them that might be handy for doing a room as long as you know you started at pc 1 say and went round in order.
When plugged in via usb it acts just like a normal scanner as well.
