Daft question: How do you start TCP/IP on an old edition of Xp Home? One of our school laptops is being wireless dead. (It can see the linkstation, though.)
If I go into Admin and look under Services, it says that TCP is enable and started. If I try and PING from a Dos prompt, it says that TCP/IP isn't running.
I'm not sure where else to look.
Any other thoughts as to why this laptop might be refusing to see the other computers (particularly the on with the shared drives) in the workgroup would be appreciated. It might just be falling apart from old age.
Thanks.
Michele

26th March 2008, 10:52 AM #2 If you're running XP SP2, if you right click the Wireless Network Connection icon in the Taskbar and choose View Available Wireless Networks can you do this?
If you can't, make sure the adapter is enabled first! If you can, search for the wireless network in question and attempt to connect to it. If you're still having difficulties, make sure wireless security on the laptop has been setup correctly.
To prove there's nothing wrong with the TCP/IP service, presumably connecting an Ethernet cable works and an IP is allocated by DHCP? If yes, then the problem will be wireless related and not service related.

Hi Michael. I can see the school's wireless network (and a few of the near neighbors). The adapter is enabled and I've also re-run the wireless setup a few times, but I must admit I haven't tried just plugging it into the wired network.
Thanks - maybe at least I'll see a different error.

Is the laptops ethernet port working fine?
Check the properties of each connection and make sure TCP/IP is enabled.
Try pinging 127.0.0.1 (loopback) and see if that is working ok
