People who say "there's an error message" but don't tell you what it is are one of my real pet hates - it doesn't give you much to go on if you want to help

You sure it's 1054? 1054 is usually "A thread could not be created for the service. "

1053 is The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Could you confirm which you have?

    Have a look at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903220

Have you recently installed SP1? Is exchange on a DC? Any other events in the event viewer?
