We had that problem. We replaced all our tapes and the tape drive. There is something on the head apparently and it can spread between tapes. Sounds odd I know. But anyway when we did that we didn't have a problem.

You can also try running the backup manually, right click > run now and when the backup has finished it may get stuck on 99% so you will need to eject the tape in backup exec.

if you look at the job monitor snapshot above, you can see that the Elapsed Time for the back up is over 90 hours which mean that the job was running for (nearly 4 days) and the Byte count is showing Tirabytes. but it would not reject the tape I had to manualy eject the tape. after the manual eject, the Current Job was scheduled to 3 days ago and when i enter a tape the drive ejects it, and to get it schedule ie for today I had to restart the server and insert the tape and then it will accept the tape, and then the same will happen tomorrow and i had to manually eject the tape.

Sounds very similar to what we had. We changed all out tapes and drive and it was fixed (under Dell warrenty)

What capacity can the tapes hold?

I take it you have checked:

    http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/285613.htm
    https://forums.symantec.com/syment/b...essage.id=9143

Also you could re-boot your server but I would just stop and start every single Backup exec service - [ some are linked anyhoo ]

What is the capacity of the tapes? Are they coming towards being full?

try and get 1 new tape and try that if it works your sorted if not you know the drive is broke.

also try and get hold of the test tool for your drive which will run a diagnostic test and tell you what is wrong but beware the last drive we did this it wouldn't fail every time so run them more than once

believe me i have had about 8 drives break on me in 7 years. if you have a support contract with someone they will first ask have you tried new tapes etc and if you have run a diag test

Check out the HP tape tools diagnostic thingy. It's good at seeing what's wrong with HP drives. It'll be around Here somewhere.

<edit> D'oh! Took too long finding the link </edit>
