Just thought I'd point out some software I was told about at a recent meeting. I've not had a massive look yet but on the surface it seems a nice piece of free software.
It does an automatic inventory of hardware and software on the network, will alert you when some things aren't up do date ie Sophos, alerts on low disk space, all sorts.
It also has a built in helpdesk, though I've not tried it yet.
Anyway, just thought it might be of some interest.

18th January 2008, 11:57 AM #4 We have it here appears good, but is slow as mentioned, and the fact I have not used it since before xmas, I dont think I like it that much for that reason.

18th January 2008, 12:15 PM #6 Got it on the system, just updated to the new V2 which seems slightly faster. Not really using it anger though except to look at DNS problems.

18th January 2008, 12:24 PM #7 version 2's been heaps faster here, just starting to use it properly

18th January 2008, 12:32 PM #8 We use it her and although it is slow, I find it very useful. The reports are really useful especially from an asset management point of view.

yea ive used it, it has a few good points with it being free etc, but id say its only good for a small network, we installed it on our sytem with over 600 machines
but as mentioned it is slow, but its worth giving it go

18th January 2008, 02:23 PM #10 I've used it for quite some time and find it to be very useful. Especially at my primary school's where there was no real handover and I had to work out what was what my self.
It's also very good for getting an audit of the school's hardware, I have it running on my workstation in the office and it's scheduled to perform a scan at 9am every day (most machines are turned on about 8.30), I'm at primary schools all day so the scanning doesnt affect me using the workstation and I think the inventory is only missing a small number of machines and we have over 700.
I'm thinking about using the helpdesk features at my primary schools so they don't wait till I walk through the door and then talk at me.

18th January 2008, 02:33 PM #11 It's a great product and I like the fact that it is free. The only drawback though is the speed at which it runs. I've not tried version 2 so I can't say whether or not there have been any improvements. The support is great too.

18th January 2008, 03:00 PM #12 Version two has made a huge impact on the speed. The network of 700+ computers used to take a few days to complete, but now it manages it within a working day. Not bad at all considering the information it collects

18th January 2008, 04:02 PM #13 It doesn't do helpdesk but I found that LANSweeper was an excellent inventory system.
