CC4 - Intermittent: Printer not showing
We have CC4 4.2 and on Windows 7 SP1 machines sometimes when a user logs in they can't print because the common room printer is not showing. I reboot the computer and it shows again. This is happening quite a lot. I've tried rebuilding the machines and it's still happening. A reboot usually helps but this is not ideal when teachers are trying to teach and print.
Under RMMC locations the printer is specified here so it is assigned to all computers.
Can anyone please help or point me in the right place to look?

We're on CC4 and there have been quite a few updates about printer mapping released (check out the knowledge base for the latest ones).
Same thing happens with us - no rhyme or reason just sometimes people log on and there is no printer. We have setup a shortcut for staff on the start menu to run in manually as a work around.
Students have to log off and on again.

This is a known problem with CC4 and it's one we suffered with too.
RM at first blamed our setup, but they have released a few updates as mentioned before that improve print mapping reliability. They've released an update that runs as a service, checks if the printer is mapped, and if not, maps the printer. (this was released about 3 or 4 months ago). It can take a few minutes for this to happen though. Basically this is another "feature" of CC4, and I had to resort to writing a VB program that does what the RM software should do - map printers based on the computer name - and funnily enough this few lines of VB maps the printers every time...

Touch wood since the recent updates, we've not had any problems with missing printers. Are you up to date on all the CC4UPD's?

Certainly make sure you're up to date with all the CC4 Updates and make sure that you have the RM Printer Agent package installed. That helps with a lot of issues with printers roaming/not roaming.
If things are still playing up then certainly look at updating the printer drivers as Windows 7 is a lot less tolerant of drivers than XP used to be and as a result the Print Spooler can crash more often.

yeah we have the Print Spooler crash fairly often, esp with Kyocera drivers >
