Re: help with network address and subnet

    Firstly you need this link:

    http://jodies.de/ipcalc

This will save you alot of time and trouble, once you have used this for a bit you will see what you need to do to get what you need without need to do to much brain work.

For you first line you would have:

    Address: 164.14.83.19 10100100.00001110 .01010011.00010011
    Netmask: 255.255.0.0 = 16 11111111.11111111 .00000000.00000000
    Wildcard: 0.0.255.255 00000000.00000000 .11111111.11111111
    Network: 164.14.0.0/16 10100100.00001110 .00000000.00000000 => (Class B)
    Broadcast: 164.14.255.255 10100100.00001110 .11111111.11111111
    HostMin: 164.14.0.1 10100100.00001110 .00000000.00000001
    HostMax: 64.14.255.254 10100100.00001110 .11111111.11111110
    Hosts/Net: 65534

That should get you started however you will notice that in your example your subnet mask is incorrect

Re: help with network address and subnet

If this is for your CCNA read the online materials because it will help you with doing this.

It's best not to use the online ip calculators and to get used to doing it by hand. Also get used to doing the maths in your head or on paper that you'd use your ordinary calculator for. Just use the calculator to check it or you'll never learn how to do it yourself.

In the practical exams for CCNA etc you're not allowed to take in or use any calculators and you have to do it yourself (Well...I'm not allowed) so it's worth learning.

Re: help with network address and subnet

its not for ccna, i did this earlier this year, i dont wanna use a calculator as i wont be allowed a calc in the main exam

where i am getting confused is how to work out the network address and subnet address, i do not know which to convert

i have the host address and i know this needs to be converted to binary and added to either the supernet or the subnet mask but not sure,

below is an example i have done

    10100100 00001110 01010011 00010011 (host_address)
    11111111 11111111 00000000 00000000 (supernet)
    ---------------------------------------
    10100100 00001110 00000000 00000000 = network address or subnet mask?

i'm not sure if i 've worked out the network address or subnet address, your help will be much appreciated.

    thanks.

Re: help with network address and subnet

i've had a go on the first example,

here's wot i have worked out so far

    network address = Host_ad + Subnet mask

    10100100.00001110.01010011.00010011 (host_address)
    11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000 (subnet_mask)
    -----------------------------------------------
    10100100.00001110.01010011.00000000 (network address) = 164.14.83.0

    Subnet Address = Net_ad + supernet

    10100100.00001110.01010011.00000000 (network Address)
    11111111.11111111.00000000.00000000 (Supernet)
    -----------------------------------------------
    10100100.00001110.00000000.00000000 (subnet address) = 164.14.0.0

    have i dont this correctly?
