I've just tried that download of 3Com Network Director and, while it found all our PCs, it only picked up their IP numbers not the device names (although it got names for all the print servers), and missed a few of our managed switches. Is there any way to get it to interrogate the machine name of the PCs?

presumably so, otherwise it wouldn't have been able to get the names of the switches and print servers, right?
