    Windows 7 Phone

    I was just looking at options to upgrade my ageing Iphone 3GS. I was interested in the Windows 7 Phones available until I read this;

    I'm sure another 3-4 months with the iPhone 3GS won't hurt.

    Windows Phone 8 looks like it will be worth the wait.

    This is why I waited and grabed a really cheap WP7 phone (less than $200 with 16GB storage) so I get the benifits without the penalty. TBH apart from the app compatibility the phones will still be good when W8 comes out, they do their job of making a complex mash up of many different social networks, communication methods and contact databases into a single simple and quick UI. The data centric experience is really a good way to do a phone.

    That said it does suck of them to pull the rug out from everyone but it's not entirely unexpected given their lackluster recent history with phones. I'd be pissed if I'd brought a Lumina 900 though.

    I'm probably wrong but I'm not convinced that the App's will dry up that quickly once WP8 appears anyway to be honest, WP7 apps will still be compatible with WP8 so I cant see developers instantly dropping WP7 development for another new platform with a handful of users until they either need the new WP8 features or it has started to take off.

    Had a WP7 since launch back in Oct 2010, still got the phone, and will have until WP8 comes out. I don't really download many apps to my phone as most of them are built into the OS. I had an 18 month contract for this very reason, that I could dump my phone when the planned Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) came out (I was expecting it).

    To be fair to MS they will have supported the 1st gen phones for 2 years, which is the norm for contracts these days. Mind the lumia phone users may feel a little peeved.

    As far as I can tell the App side of things shouldn't change that much, the only reason that some apps will require WP8 and not WP7 is just to access the new hardware or the low level api's. Which if designing an WP app the rule is you don't go near the low level api's if you can help it.
