Google Docs app
I've installed Google's Docs app, however I'm struggling to make it work - I can open a document okay, but I don't see how to save it back to Google Docs. I can "save" or "save as..." but that looks like it is saving it to my phone, not the cloud.
Has anyone used this?

I have a vague recollection of reading in the comments that it currently does not support editing documents locally.
I currently use GDocs for writing to basic text files with limited success. It does however allow for offline editing then syncing later.

The stuff on their web site says how collaborators can see live changes (it even has a video showing this). I'll try GDocs, but it would be weird if a third party app was more functional than Google's own one!

I might not understand what your asking but Docs auto saves every 5 secs or so. Create a new doc type something, go back to the docs main page and your new document should be listed.
Then if you share that doc with someone they can work on it at the same time as you.
I would look at google docs for education as it gives you admin control and no adds.

Creating new docs seems okay - I am trying to edit a pre-existing one, and it doesn't seem to be syncing it back (or I wasn't seeing the changes because I already had it open elsewhere in Excel - that could be it, actually...)
We have Google Apps for Education, however my phone is registered to my personal Google account, not my work one (and will remain so unless the school pays the bill!), so I've had to share the document from my work Google account to my home one.

Not getting too far with that one either - I can see the doc, but when I tap on it, it juts says "download document first" and I can't see how to do that.

That's really weird. In the not so distant past you would just click again and that would download it but on mine it won't now either!

I've been using this for some time.
I add my home account, my school account and a shared (ITsupport) school account.
I can switch between the different accounts and documents seem to sync ok.
Did you do something like turn sync off? or set to sync only on wifi?

I've just had another play with GDocs and it gives me the download first message for anything other than actual Google Documents which download and allow editing fine.

I have turned auto-sync off, as I was getting annoyed with my phone beeping every time I got an email. Having it automatically sync every Google component just so I can occasionally use Docs seems like a sledgehammer-to-walnut approach...
