I think I need to be able to get it to actually scan the sort of barcodes that we come across firstI thought it was me not being able to keep a steady hand. How about an option to output a QR code?
Once the app is up and running we could generate your own asset tag reference and send it to a computer to print out.
I'm going to 2 more fields in - location and something to cope with Dell asset numbers, anything else thats vital (need to keep number down so that screen doesn't overflow

Very interested in this, Si.....
Have downloaded, installed, and now waiting for next week to try it out!
This could help our inventory system, no end!
Version 0.31 availableSimpleScan_0_31.zip
Dropdown for model numbers (saved in /sdcard/simplescan/config/models.xml
and its linked to manufacturer. New models entered are saved when record is stored like manufacturer)
Screen orientation forced to portrait as run out of room in landscape mode.
Going to add location field
Not going to add special asset number for Dells as too specilised - that'll have to go into description.
Will try to default manf/model/location to previous values to speed up doing a whole room
I use Easy Installer and it just asks to overwrite when I tried it out. When I installed the new version I only had options to un-install or run no upgrade option.
PS If people could contribute a few Manufacturer/Model pairs so I can populate a default database like the manufacturer one, it'd be really helpful
Please use a csv format
ASUS, EEEPC 701
or just attach a copy of your models.xml
TaCode:?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?> <Models>

<Manufacturer>ASUS</Manufacturer>

<Manufacturer>ASUS</Manufacturer>

<Manufacturer>Acer</Manufacturer>
</Models>
Got the location field done as well SimpleScan_0_4.zip
The internal SQLite database has been changed but hopefully Android library automagic should save your data but you may want to do an export before running the new version
The export itself has been changed to produce a better structured inventory.xml file.
Fields are no longer cleared when storing an item so that if you were batch processing it would save time and effort.
Failing any major issues I'd consider this version to be close to actually being useful (because even if the barcode doesn't read - you can type serial numbers in and use it to actually store your inventory.
Things I'm working on next
Add in one user defined field.
Add import function for inventory (so it can be edited off line and re-imported if needed)
Going to investigate what barcodes its failing on and whether I can add them to the library.

V0.41 SimpleScan_0_41.zip available
Just lets you import your inventory from a previously exported inventory.xml using a menu option
(Only works with >=0.4 style inventory.xml if you really need to import a previous version - just post it here (or a link if its big) and I'll convert it for you )
Also code tidied up but hopefuly without introducing bugs!
OK, I've been having a bit of exploration and managed to compile the barcode scanner app from the source and incorporate some minor changes.
My version increases the amount of time the camera stays focused from 1.5 to 3 secs and also makes control of the light a bit easier (just need to press menu and then the light key - the code came from someone else BTW after I added an issue - I love opensource co-op )
Anyway to use this version, you MUST uninstall the official app and then re-install this one BarExample353b1modsw1.zip
I've also been looking into why some barcodes are not scanning and I think its mainly going to be down to optics/resolution rather than barcode libraries.
I've a eeepc 701 and that wouldn't scan but when I took a picture of it I didn't blame the app for failingasusorig.png
When I cleaned it up it scanned fine (try it out on the screen for yourself) asusclean.png
And I gave up trying to get this one from an acer to any sort of readable state! acer1001.png
I'm into the scanning code now and I think one basic problem is that that serial numbers are coded in barcode 128 (well there are on an acer, asus and hp laptopsthat I've checked) and that is a high density code (compared to retail product codes anyway).
And also, the code uses the camera preview image (which AFAICTSF seems to be screen resolution and not max camera resolution) so we are starting to enter very sub-nyquist sampling arena and therefore not suprising it can't decode them.
So I'm going to see if I can get it to capture at the camera resolution
removed ... cos I didnt read all of the first post
