The lack of being able to use a proxy is just daft and makes Android look stupid in the Year 2010.

    Apart from that - great

You miss the point. This isn't about desktop machines. It's about windows, mac and linux laptops, ipads, androids, meegoo, meamo, symbian, iPhones, and all those others system I've not mentioned. At the college I'm based at we increasingly expect students to come in with their own kit and we shouldn't discriminating against them just because they choose not to use windows. Likewise we can't directly control those systems and so need to find a way of still providing safe, controlled, internet access

So, the way to not discriminate against them, as a device creator is to remove functionality that's incredibly basic to include? I don't get it...

Which is a good idea but with direct 3G to the internet to phones (and there laptops if 3G - my acers have a 3G sim card slot) - that horse is out of the stables and is several hundred miles away now.

Internet filtering in schools nowadays is like banning the use of kitchen knives in the classroom but not preventing bringing your own in from home.
(apart from schools who ban phones and enforce the ban stricktly)

I starting to think android users are just a big 'fanboys' as apple users

Anyway back on topic has anyone used any apps to edit the proxy as going to be pain if i have to go to command line every time to change it.

I keep meaning the try this app at work, but never get arround to it.

If I remember I'll give it a go tomorrow, otherwise someone else might be able to try? You need to allow untrusted sources to install it. ProxySetting-signed.apk - proxysetting - ProxySetting v1.0 (available on the Android Market) - Project Hosting on Google Code

This is far from ideal (since it should be in the stock builds) but I've noticed Cyanogen 5.x has a settings menu for adding a proxy.

Perhaps one of you G1/ Magic / N1 guys could try that?
