Windows Mobile 7... no more SD card apps?!

    Just seen this...

WinMo 7 coming without Flash support? | News | TechRadar UK

The flash I don't care about... always added it on later but this line is a joke...

Applications only available through the Windows Mobile Marketplace, so no more installing from SD card (which could make unofficial apps obsolete)
The whole thing I like about WinMo is that I can install those little hack about apps on the phone, edit the registry and basically do what I want with the interface, themes and programs. If that gets taken away I'll either stick with 6.5 ROMs for the considerable future or abandon ship... who thinks of this stuff

Flash - surely they need to rethink this?

    But "Apps Store only":

I blame Apple! (Bear with me...)

Thanks to the success of the whole "Apps Store" thing, everyone wants in on the action. Also, thick people who are unable to use Google seem to think that not having a central apps repository is a big "fail". I've seen a review of the HD2 on Amazon criticizing the phone for not having an apps store - and lack of 3rd party hardware support (docks etc).

If this is confirmed, looks like an HD2 for me rather than holding out to next year for the less rigidly "WinMo 7 UI only" batch of phones.

Wish they had, but if the iPhone has shown us anything, it will only increase the popularity of windows as a mobile OS.

Though, really, will they be able to stop people putting what they want on their phones, I mean I can run apps from marketplace without connecting to the marketplace, so unless they're checking...

Also wow, had to post this smiley Wow, that looks great

Why not give people the choice instead of assuming we're all stupid and can only install an app if it's plonked under our noses with a direct connection to our credit cards... oh wait... money I hear you say? Ah that would be the reason

Is it me, or is the start page for WM7 fugly? It looks to messy to me.

Mind you, I didn't find the WM6 interface as bad as everyone makes out - but maybe I'm just too old to appreciate the design aesthetic in WM7. (My phone is used more as a PDA than a phone and I don't need all the contacts/social gubbins glaring out at me).

    +++++++++ android

WM has lost appeal for me, although I do like the new Opera V10 browser v quick compared to the default.

No copy and paste either, according to various sites.

    • Rubbish GUI
    • No third-party apps
    • No cut/copy/paste
    • No Win Mobile 7 on existing hardware ("too many buttons!")

Yep, MS are really going in the right direction to get a hold of the mobile market

People don't want to be locked down! Definitely more of a reason to take the Android route. There's bound to be a physical handset that suits your needs.

After the MiX Conference even I am considering Android instead. They have neutered WinMobile.

From the MiX event videos Videos :: Microsoft MIX10 they go out of their way to say that they are now targeting consumers only and will not consider businesses "in this release". Those must have been the most uttered words at MiX, well that or "delight".

    Other unfun realizations from MiX:
Only software through the App store
No corporate deployment options of apps
No native code - silverlight or XNA only
No use of local SQL for data (cloud or XML only)
    No multitasking
    No sharing data between apps
    Apps must go through approval
You must apply for a free developer unlock code from MS to dev to a phone

    The good news:
    Good hardware
Well thought out power management states
All development tools are now and will be free including the emulator Windows Phone für Entwickler | Windows Phone: Entwicklerhomepage

Overall unless they pull off a major miracle then I am swinging towards android. I did have a post that outlined some of this before but deleted it as it was a bit to strongly worded.

I know M$ get blamed a lot for copying stuff from other people... but they have copied the original iPhone with no cut and paste this time! Bad idea!!

Its competitors are already way ahead in terms of usability its going to offer nothing new and alienate the customers they have already in the mobile market.
