Got HTC Hero the other week. Going from years of PAYG, its a bit weird having a phone that can do so much, but here are some apps (all free) I liked and if you have any that you think are also good, let me know!
Advanced Task Killer: 2 click kill everything. Plus add apps to an always on list.
Android VNC: does what you may think
beebPlayer: iplayer and live streaming
Digital Clock: full screen clock and alarm
Dope Wars: How many copies on the AppStore that cant do this properly!
ES File Explorer: Local, network and zip files
FrodoC64: C64 emulator
Google Sky Maps: 360 degree!
GPS Status: GPS compass, height and accelleration
Info Droid: tells you power and SD card usage
Layar: augmented reality app
Locale: Sets different user profiles dependant on location/condistion
Metal Detector: YEP, it works!
OscanO: port tester
ScummVM: you knows it
Snesoid Lite: Snes Emulator
Telnet: Tells you next weeks lottery results

Nope mine seems fine.
I have it rooted, and have installed the latest HTC Hero Stock ROM and have upgraded the radio (signal).
Apparently when Hero users get the 2.1 upgrade there will be an apps2sd program which saves all your apps to your sd card instead of using phone space.
Are you using a task killer?
also Gensoid and Gamesoid emulators are great, mapp the volume up and down keys as A & B and tick the option in settings to reverse the screen and use the trackball as a joypad! Loving streets of Rage and Zelda!

Some others I use include:
Last.fm: Free personalised radio station
AK notepad: notepad that you can also use to setup reminders
Movie Finder: find cinemas by search or GPS and get show times and reviews
Listen: download and listen to podcasts
Places directory: use GPS to find nearest petrol stations, cafes, bars, shops, hospitals, etc
SayNoTo0870: dial an 0870 number and this software finds a cheaper alternative starting with 01
The Weather Channel: in-depth weather forecast
SnapTell: take a pic of a DVD, book, CD or its barcode and this will find you prices online, reviews and clips
The Daily Telegraph app: free newspaper on your phone
and some games:
bonsaiblast, connect4, moviz hangman, labyrinth lite, jewels, torect lite, pac-man, slide puzzle and light racer

Although not a useful app Armadillo Roll is good free tech demo/game that shows the 3D capabilities of the phone.
