iPhone wifi

Im looking at getting the iPhone and i was wondering if the wifi turns off when it auto locks or when the screen goes off?

The reason i ask is that im want to get a phone that links into the exchange server and purely uses the wifi connection for email and only use the the mobile carrier when not in a wifi area eg: school or home. I would want a constant connection to the wifi when the phone goes into standby.

I do know that nokia have mail for exchange on certain phones which does what i need but i was wondering if the iPhone done something similar

Nope, doesn't switch off :-)

The WIFI stays on as long as the phone is on. If you lock it the phone the WIFI stays connected and e-mails come in.

You will have to tell it to connect to the WIFI for the first time. After you have connected once when ever you near the AP it will automatically connect. If your not in a WIFI zone it will use 3G

Yes.

It remembers the networks you join and if it can connect to your mail accounts it will. If it can't connect via WiFi it uses 3G or whatever it can to connect and get mail etc.

can you view attatchments like word and excel docs and pdf on it aswell?

Yip, it has support for these. One thing to be aware of when joining them to WiFi is that when they go to sleep they do tend to drop the WiFi connection. When the phone is brought back up again it will then reconnect to the WiFi point.

Can't think that mine does that.

it's sitting next to me now, my wee boy plays on it and has a habit of not switching it off. When it goes off itself it still uses wifi to get mail ( I don't get a reception where we are at the moment)

If its not been in standby for long it will keep its connection - if its longer then say 30 mins or so then it drops it and when you turn it back on you have to re connect / refresh the connection using OS 3.0 on last years iphone ( not the 3GS )

For me it can do it has short as a about 30 seconds, then other times it'll stay on for longer. Does my head in having to wait for it to reconnect.
