We have use nlite to build a cut-down windows XP Pro install on the NC10 and it works great! We used the Slimming Down Windows XP Professional Using nLite [EeeUser Eee PC Wiki] guide as our starting point. We needed make sure we had an XP Pro license and downloaded the np-nc10 drivers from samsung website first of course

I'd go for a Samsung NC10, good batt life and great keyboard. The 10.2" screen is the perfect trade off between size and portability. We have 35 of these in school.
If you need a cheaper option the Acer Aspire One series is a good 2nd choice, especially if you buy the Linux version.
