    Question Charging an iPod touch

My daughter has a new iPod touch.

We have 3 iPod nanos at home and regularly charge them using a mains charger... particularly handy when we go on holiday and don't have a PC/laptop.

Plugged in the mains charger to the touch and it complained that it wasn't compatible with the charger

Will it charge with this charger? I can't see why it would damage it. Or do we have to take a laptop on holiday now?

This may be another case of apple marketing strategy. They decided to lock certain accessories to specific products a while back, forcing users to buy new accessories for their newer devices. This may be the case here, if it charges via usb it may be an idea to try a generic usb charger that does not provide an ident code to the ipod if this is the case.

I seem to remember some talk about them changing the charging pins in the dock connectors on the new 3g iPhone - maybe they've done the same on the touch?

I'd look at apples website and see if theres any indication in the support section.

This is probably it as my older ipod touch charges fine from my old ipod mains charger.

IIRC, old-style iPods can charge via the FireWire interface power pins on the dock connector, and a lot of mains chargers use those pins. iPod Touch and iPhone models can be charged ONLY with the USB power pins in the dock connector, so can't work with older chargers. You could always get a USB power adaptor and use the iPod Touch cable with that - that works with my iPhone.

I will try that - I have a USB adaptor supplied with a phone that someone no longer has.

Yeah - of course! I've even got one of these (stupid me....)

Apple Store (U.K.) - Apple USB Power Adapter

obviously thats apples one, a cheaper one should be available.
you basically just plug in the existing usb lead.
