Thanks @elsiegee40 Thanks also duly now given to @Dos_Box for his original posting - I'd obviously missed it. Worrying that Edugeek were onto this in Feb yet it's only now that the BEEBS picked it up!

The Uupay.D spyware was only discovered recently - 14th June to be exact.

The BBC are referring to the same GData report that Heise.de are in the link I posted above @elsiegee40's so the BBC are only four days late.

@Dos_Box. Have you scanned your phone? ESET Mobile Security and AV will detect Trojan.Uupay.

Amazon are still selling the Star N9500.

The following thread on the XDA forums might be of interest too since it contains some instructions for removing the Chinese spyware apps.

Cure for Chinese Notification Spam & Random App Installations « xda-developers

Apparently the iNew/Alps i7000 smartphone also comes with an older version of the same trojan (Uupay.A) so it's not just phones made by Star.

Interesting. I had scanned the two phones I brought from China with a couple of different AV tools and both came up clean. They both also have AV installed.
I did have to manually dig out a few Chinese apps on teh seond phone I brought, but I suspect I brought mine before this kind of tactic became popular.
