    Accounts and VPP

Hi this thread is very similar to a few here but didnt want to hijack others.

Just got into one of my schools today to find they have purchased 6 ipads out of the blue. I am happy with itunes and using my iphone at home ,but not sure on the legal situation in schools with multipul apps.
So far the business manager has created a apple id and added the credit card to it. So say if we wanted unlebobsfabapp we would have to purchase it 6 times to have the correct licensing? but whats this VPP is that better to use in this instance? how easy is it? Basically we have nothing set up or in place yet, also we have no wifi in school so everything will either be downloded plugged into a computer or at a teachers house via there wifi.

    Thanks for any help

    Hi Matt

VPP is ok, but really only benefit comes when your order over 20 copies of the app, Depending on how often you are on site, and whether you want to run a Profile manager will probably sway you either way.

From speaking to someone at apple before, as long as you can prove that you have purchased the correct number of apps for your devices you are ok. Not having wireless connectivity does make Profile Managers a pointless task.

This my personal view, in this situation VPP could be the way forward, you can then buy 6 copies of an app and then redeem them to the same iTunes account.

You can then set up 1 of the iPads the way that is required, with the required apps. The following 5 can then just be restored from that devices backup and all will look the same. (remember to change their individual names). The benefit of doing this is when the devices get messed with, and require restoring iTunes restore from backup will put it all back into place for you.

Your accountability is the fact you have 6 redeem codes and they have been redeemed by itunes its self. Apple seem to be very hush about what they expect us to keep in the way of records of App Purchases. It wont hurt to start the ball rolling by using https://volume.itunes.apple.com/store?cc=GB&l=en to start the schools sign up process. Also on that page, the contact support button goes to the VPP and their heads are screwed on, im sure if you have any questions they can help.

One word of Warning. Quite a few apps are connectivity dependent, ie require a connection. More so, apps which reply on advertising I have found will fail to run or crash when there is no connection present, you may want to vet the apps first before ordering 6 codes from VPP.

    Enjoy!

    Thanks MOMST,

Can you explane this to me as you would a 4 year old .

So we would sign up to VPP with one account e.g masterappleaccount -> we would purchase apps with that.

Say have a dedicated computer in school with itunes on with a different apple account e.g other appleaccount and then use this to redeem the code. Sync everthing over to one ipad-> backup ipad -> plug another ipad in restore it(is this easy?) -> rename ipad to ipad1 .

Also have you had any issues with content, i.e adds that are not sutable for the age ranges of the apps.

    Ok, Ill try

You will need at least 2 accounts to start up VPP,

1 Account (acc1) will be the VPP Program Admin. This account cannot have been used in iTunes or with apple before. This account literally assigns accounts which are allowed to purchase apps.

Next Account (acc2) will again need to be a fresh account never linked to any apple service. This account will be used to actually purchase the apps and download codes.

Finally next account (acc3) is the iTunes account to which the iPads will be linked,iTunes will be linked with and the account which you will use to redeem the codes.

Your nearly there. Set up 1 iPad using acc3, apply all of the require download codes. Word of warning, Each code you use will actually download. So say you have six copies of angry grannies, which is 259mb, you will have to wait for it to download 6 x 259mb (apple are aware of this). Once that is all done and you then have 1 complete iPad backed up, restore this to the following 5 iPads, making sure you rename them correctly, and then further back these up.

I don't think I have ever seen any bad apps as we run via SmoothWall and it blocks most of the ads.

I must add I do not manage mine this way, I personally use Apple Profile Manager which requires you to have an apple server and I distribute all of my VPP codes via Apple Profile Manager, however without wireless this would not be an option for you.

I'm sure its not the correct way as I have said before, I just know it works, I use that method of 3 separate iPads I have which are used for specialist purposes.

Interesting. The account I used to sign up to VPP was a gmail account that I had previously used in iTunes and downloaded free apps with. They approved my application so I assume all was ok. Does the above rule only apply when the iTunes account has been linked to a credit card?
