Just found this - IpHack - Hack Ipswich - [28/4/2012] - just thinking, if they do another one, does anyone have any idea of an App that would use the SIMS API that I could create? It would have to be fairly basic. Still I might do something completely different as Capita's license would be too restrictive.
What you mean other than a bulk email importer?
How about, something that lets you create a group, UDG, from the basis of a report output to Excel. I know it's kind of like the dynamic groups now available, but there must be some fields it doesn't cater for. E.g. I need to know all students who live on a particular housing compound, or whose nationality is Saudi.
What about something that imports some AD data into the student records? Or something to export and manipulate timetable info into a calendar?
I know, they are not all necessarily SIMS API related.
Why not do something that links addresses in SIMS to google maps. They have some funky APIs to use. You could center on the school address, and then plot students data (which in theory could be a spreadsheet export from any data system). I'm pretty sure LAs have a tool to do this anyway, so it might be boring for you.
Something to bulk update UDFs?
Push student reports to their own Google docs account...?
My Bulk Import Tool already does UDFs for staff, students and Contacts - just applying polish at the moment :)
The Google Map thing - Pretty sure Capita have already done that, well they used MultiMap - I think I saw a discussion about changing to Google Maps, sort of what your hinting at. Could be an interesting it idea, don't think what LA currently do is very visual - sort of a Apps | data.gov.uk idea... but less public ;)
The Timetable thing Craig is working on.
Could do a SIMS-AD-Google Apps Sync tool. Might take a while tho...
