i have been sent a patch from sims this morning to resolve a problem we are having with lesson monitor.
do i need to take the database offline and run this script as a query or is there something inside sims to do this for me?

You will need to make sure all of your users are logged out of SIMS, yes.
You may be able to apply the patch through Solus if they have made it available this way or using dbUpgrade if they've sent it in a ZIP.
Make sure you have a recent backup beforehand.

1. Save the patch onto a directory on your system, e.g. C:\TEMP.
2. Select Start | Programs | Sims Applications | dbUpgrade (You may find this in the SIMS folder if it's not there)
3. Choose the option ‘Run the following SIMS database upgrade file’
Browse to the directory where you have saved the patch files and choose the file
4. Type in your username and password and click Login.
5. Click Install on the following screen. This process can take some time.
6. Click OK on the message that your database has been updated
