Well, here we are... update done :)
Well, here we are... update done :)
Yeah, ours was done on Monday.
Good God, it's slow
What are you running it on? We haven't found it to be much different to the previous version.
(w2k sp4 on P3 1Ghz 256Mb are our slowest, most common machines)
No speed issues here also. Up to now I haven't seen any possitives from the change. And no comments from staff - have they even noticed its changed I wonder!
I don't think many of our staff, outside SMT, use SIMS until they're doing end of year reports, which they're supposed to have finished by now. I'd be surprised if they had noticed. All the day to day stuff is Bromcom.]
Have to look into that slow thing then, if nobody else is suffering. The server's a bit creaky, but not that bad, I thought. Only other thing, is Teacher's Desktop has gone belly up, again.
Teacher's Desktop never used to work with me so we didn't bother in the end.
Apparently, there's nothing major happening with Teacher's Desktop until October and, correct me if I'm wrong but, I don't even think its supported by the new Profiles 7.
Check out http://rmcharlton.blogspot.com - you'll see that I don't want to hear another word about SIMS!!!
Well, we are finally done, with some outstanding issues with Nova... NM spent 2.5hrs on the phone to Capita on Wednesday morning sorting it all out.
Within 5 minutes of sending out the "you can log into SIMS again" email to all staff, the phone rang (my machine was halfway through upgrading and I'd not even seen the new front end in use):
"how do I use this new SIMS then? It looks very complicated"
*bangs head on desk* As much as I like our receptionist, she's one of these who panic and call before they try...
The only complaints I've had regarding the new interface were that the photographs had gone missing from the student window. They had their screen running 800x600 and the links bar had covered over it :/
Though the usual suspects are still to do their upgrade....
Did ours on Thursday last week- no problems apart from the fact that .ICT took our secondary server away without DCPROMO being run first...then took it away because it wouldn't demote; leaving me to find out that they also tok away our secondary DNS server and didn't transfer that little skill to our other admin server....blah!
It's OK though. They're going to put 2003 Server on it. That's great then. Except we will be left with a relic in AD to dispose of. Oh- and I had to redirect redirected folders to another server.
SIMS. It's worse than the game!
I attempted our upgrade yesterday (Sunday) afternoon via remote access.
All was going well until half way through the db upgrade the PC crashed.
Couldn't get remote access back onto the PC I was using, so had to wait until this morning to find out the reason for it.
Got in early to find the PC I had used decided to reboot and then not recognise the hard drive.
Tried to open sims only to get an error message saying an updated had failed.
Logged an online support call with capita at 8.50am after tralling trough the help files. I was called by sims support at 9.00am and within 30 mins I had the system up and running with the update complete.
It not often capita get praise, but I reckon they deserve some after todays efforts. Quick call back and a support personnel who knew exactly what to do.
And I actually quite like the new interface - I think its more end user friendly, and the lesson register icon will save our teachers faffing through the menus.
SIMS.net can run happily over TS, but even Capita recommend that you do the upgrade at the box itself.
I have only been able to do a successful upgrade remotely once in the last 12 months (I still try, just in case).
I was using a VPN and VNC, so it was almost as good as being at the box - until the reboot and I couldnt press the reset button.
Hmm next thing to save up for is a VNC compliant KVM so I can see whats happening on screen at boot up, ooo and one of those remote power things you can control via a web interface to cycle the power :D
Something like this then steve [presumably if its a Dell hehe]
@Grumbledook: I used TS to do my upgrade... even disconnected the session and reconnecteed in a different room whilst I was in a meeting so that I could monitor the progress. :D
