Joining SIMS server to new domain? Any dos and don'ts?

Hi - we're moving our SIMS server from our current domain over to our new domain in a few weeks, or over the summer depending on how much headwind we pick up with our great migration.

At this stage, just looking for any advice or hints. Has anyone done this before? What's good to do and what's good to not do? Is it fairly straightforward or is it a WORLD OF BREAKAGE?

Thanks for reading, and why am I moderately dreading replies?

One thing to check is the username for the scheduled tasks (assuming the old domain is going)

I did this last summer, just removed from old domain, joined to new domain and everything was fine.

Are you changing the server name? Is it a dc or just a member server?

I should have added, our SIMS server was the last survivor of our old domain. It then started loosing the DC knocking out our drive mappings, so we had to do an emergency swap but had no issues (other than checking above)

Not changing the name (sql objects to this I hear) and not a DC.

Sims.Net Migration to a new domain

    Hello,

Does anyone have any experience and can share their knowledge on migrating a Sims.Net and FMS server to a new domain.
Or is anyone aware of some documentation that's available? As well as this I would like to move the SQL database from SQL 2008 that's currently sitting on the sims server and move it to SQL Server 2008 R2 that's installed on a dedicated SQL server.

    Thanks in advanced.

Split the jobs. Setup SQL2008 and move the database there first. Then do the SQL upgrade to SQL2008R2. There should be instructions on SupportNet for the two jobs - look for documentation about migrating to a new server. Also make plenty of backups along the way so you can always roll back. TBH SIMS doesn't really care what domain its on and its users are SQL users, not domain users, so the domain migration shouldn't be a problem.

I would just get the latest installable CD, install SIMS + FMS on the new server, the migrate the data across later. Maybe do a dummy run if you've got the time. So are you having SIMS and FMS database on a dedicated SQL box to the rest of the SIMS bits - DMS etc?

    Thanks, and sorry

So from reading what others have said above I might be able to get away with just joining the server to the new domain? but cant change the computer name if I do this.
I've registered for a supportNet account and will take a look at the documentation provided there once I've been accepted.

matt40k, Yeah I was hoping to have the databases on a dedicated box separate to sims server. Is there any negatives to this? I thought it was something most people would do...but maybe I'm wrong.

Yes All you would need to check is giving permissions on the Simsroot folder again to a group on the new domain and remove other one!

Changing computer name at any stage is fairly straight forward from SIMS point of view. It's SQL that doesn't like it. If you want to change, it's best to make a new server and reinstall SQL, then just restore SIMS over. Alter any permissions and do a config on the docstore if it's held on same server.
The only downside you might get to storing the SQL elsewhere is your support team might get confused. SIMS may run a tad slower. I don't see much advantage really.
I didn't think there was much to the SIMS server side application or is there? I thought most of it is just static data, it's just SQL that other clients access. So it already is a dedicated SQL box for only SIMS tables.

We are going to be migrating to a new domain over the Summer as well.

The SIMS server is a 2008 R2 member server on a MS Hyper V image and has SQL running on it as well.
All we want to do is join it to the new domain, no other changes are required.

I am told by our friends at Capita that all we need to do is to remove the server from the old domain and then join it to the new domain, simples.
