    DBAttach

As I posted on the Spring Update thread... I am having trouble, 2 schools so far, detaching databases. I have used the backup and also just coppied the Mdf & Ldf across before attaching. Neither will accept the logins we use. But will accept a teacher's login.

I'm really concerned about our backups, migrations and upgrades.

Is anyone else's DBAttach playing up?

I don't use DBAttach, so no help there, sorry.

However, it sounds like the SQL script to create the users isn't running, or crashing midway hence a few users work. Any error messages?

    This may help:
    SIMS.net Invalid/user name password?

Are you able to use SQL Manager to browse the server's logins (under security)? Look at the date the login object was created. If it was in the past, then you can be sure that the script hasn't run.

And unless you've proven your backups by restoring, you only have what are called 'alleged backups'.

@creese - Why are you detaching? In order to backup?
Are you detaching and reattaching to a different server?
Maybe if you detach and attach to the same server once, it will sort the logins.

Are you using trusted logins, i know last year when i was messing around with a test server the reattach kept failing with an error because i had trusted logins, and i didn't have it setup on the domain correctly. However, even when going to a new server, the attach process was pushing all other logins into the new system despite the ones that errored.

It's the latest for the upgrade we are using. Not in the office at the moment so can't check.

I have however got a script to run from Capita. Not sure when I will be able to check it though.... busy.. busy

Moving database to a new server. The other attempt was to restore from a backup. Two different routines with the same result.

I never detach. Always just take a backup either from SQL itself or via system manager, and then restore the .bak file. Maybe you can use that as a workaround. I'm pretty sure that was the process i used and was describing earlier. I didn't do a reattach it was just a restore and the restore process also pushes the logins into the db. Might be worth a try.

I've tried every method, with the same unhappy ending. A colleague had problems to, yesterday. Maybe it's a Red Herring and it's the server... which we didn't build. Should know more next week.

Is it possible to run an upgrade, but not have sufficient permissions over the SQL server, so that SIMS upgrades, but the logins aren't pushed into the master table..?

I just did a detach on my test autumn 11 setup. Moved files elsewhere, then reattached. Didn't close and reopen dbattach like they tell you to. No problems, no errors. I did change to Simple recovery mode just before i detached, as i had a rather large LDF, don't think that matters. I guess since it was an in situ detach/reattach not quite the same issue you have.

Just about to upgrade to Spring now to see what happens there.

They rebuilt the server. I backed up and restored to the new one. Logged in fine.

My money is on the orignal build be faulty.

Worry over. I can now think about Spring Update.
