SIMS.net needing Admin account?
Hi all,
This is my first role within a school environment, and so my first opportunity to get to know SIMS.net. Yay!
When I arrived, things were in a bad shape. Let's just say, I've now removed Domain Admin rights from the entire SLT.
I have just noticed that the office personnel also have admin rights (local). Is this needed for SIMS? Can I demote them without SIMS breaking?
Many thanks in advance
Matt

23rd January 2012, 09:23 AM #2 if you look in your sims setupd folder you should find a batch file call simsperm.bat.
This is all you should need to apply to a specific group to allow the rights required to run SIMS .net

Fantastic, thanks Mcshammer! I'll make a new OU for them then.
Appreciated!

23rd January 2012, 10:21 AM #4 Please note that's just so they can apply the upgrades themselves. Windows 7 needs additional steps - unless simsperm.bat been updated??

I apply the upgrades through SOLUS. They're running Vista/XP, no Win7 machines in there at the moment.
Could I just check - SIMS definitely doesn't need admin rights to operate day-to-day, it's just for the updating procedure?
Many thanks for all your help - appreciate it!

23rd January 2012, 10:36 AM #6 It doesn't need Admin rights, no. Just file permissions on the SIMS folder and (IIRC) a file in the Windows system folder.

23rd January 2012, 12:29 PM #7 windows\temp permissions over sims.ini etc. should be fine for xp. vista should be okay, it's only win7 that gets really fussy.
all the info from simsperm.bat should cover xp, and i don't think it's been updated for win7 @matt40k but there was a thread where someone was trying out a policy to replicate simsperm for win7.
@MattHarwood, try it out on one of your staff and see what happens. I remember our old support team, always used to say, give them at least power user rights on the local machine, which helps with other programs not just SIMS.

I would also give rights to parts of the registry. We had a setup with addons, and they never updated properly when we only went for the above option.

23rd January 2012, 01:01 PM #9 I'm surprised Matt hasn't mentioned it, but they need very little permission if you deploy SIMS to the clients via #SOLUS3
If you use something like SLG or other third party software - you could even do away with the need to have client software installed at all.
