    Training Database

    Hi all,

I am going to create a VM with Server 2008R2 and SQL 2008R2 with the aim of taking a backup of our existing SIMS database (currently using SQL2008 R2) and then attaching it as a new database on the new "Training" server.

I have seen some disussion on DBAttach? We currently use Trusted Authentication and would like to continue to do so on the "Training Server" is the DBAttach process still relevant?

    Any help would be great

    Thanks

Yes, dbattach will work, question, will the training server be on the same domain?

    Thanks for your advice.

Yes, just creating a Virtual machine on another server. My plan is to patch it, install SQL 2008 R2, Patch that. Copy all the files from SIMS directory on current "live server", make a backup of current SIMS sql database, restore it to new "Training" server. Change the connect.ini to point to training server on a new SIMS shortcut. Then somehow change the doc server storage location on the training server?

Well thats my plan in my head anyway!

    Have i missed something?

SQL 2008 R2 - make sure you enable TCPIP

Copy the docstorage folder - then within the folder, edit the subfolder with the new server name. Then logon to SIMS .net, tools > setups > document management server and change the server name.

Should be ok from the top of my head.

Sorry not quite sure what you mean here, TCP/IP where? In the SQL setup? The VM has a shared network connection with the host. Or are you referring to something different?

I seem to be going around in circles with this one! I have installed OS and SQL 2008 R2 and created a SIMS instance, i copied all the shared files over from exisiting server as well as the doc storage.

When i run SIMSinst.exe and select to install the server option it prompts to select a Database Instance and doesnt show the one i created, only create a new 32bit instance, if i select that it launches the SQl 2008 R2 installer with the free option (MSSQL) selected and greyout out!

Anyone any ideas? I have tried instlling without the server option, restoring SIMS database to new server from backup of existing server and changing the connect.ini but still no joy! :-(

Looked at getting a new clean SIMS ISO from supprtnet but cannot find it anywhere so just run from our existing share.

    The Autumn release is here:

Not sure if you can do a clean install from it though.

@dblight - Could be your SIMSINST is out-of-date, never tested it against SQL2008 R2, but it should work. I would install SIMS Document Server, then manually run simssqlapplicationsetup.exe.

Take the clean install iso from SupportNet KB #110102 then you can run whichever update you want on top of that. http://support.capitaes.co.uk/websup...10102.xmlFalse

You'll need to create rules in the built-in firewall to allow through the SQL ports too.

The linked article is i think a news item, so not in the normal search area. To find the solution (i.e. KB article) for the autumn release and also the one i mention above go to web support | solution search , change software to .net and type in iso as the search criteria.

Sometimes depending on where you work, you may find access levels differ.

EDIT: sorry, must be jet-lagged after BETT, i just did a refresh, and that last post telling you the search term wasn't there!

Here's a quick run-down i wrote before. SIMS Server Install Guide

I tend to restore a backup, but if you want the logins to go over, you could detach the live one, copy it, then reattach both to live / test respectively. Hopefully that way the logins will be available. I did this ages ago for a test, and got lots of errors just by doing a restore of the .bak file backup created in SQL Studio, but it was mostly because the test server was not on the domain at the time.
