SIMs licensing conundrum
If an LA holds the SIMS licenses for all Of their schools and the LA support service goes belly up so to speak, what happens to the licenses? Do they get released to the schools?

10th January 2012, 05:28 PM #3 Our LA support has just been sold to Capita (so they now manage) our LA licensing hasn't been affected as it is not owned by the support team its owned by the LA.

I concur with the above unless special arrangements have been made by the original supplier.

Is the support service part of the LA or a subsidiary/company? If it is part of the LA, the license is simply owned by the LA as a whole, not the department.
So, regardless of whether the LA close their support division, you still have a license, just now you'd have to pay for ongoing support via Capita.

11th January 2012, 12:40 PM #7 Depends who owns the license (it'll be the LA, not the support team) and whether their licensing was cheaper because the LA support team bears the brunt of the end-user helldesk calls.

11th January 2012, 12:45 PM #8 As an LA Support Team, we do not own the license. We buy on behalf of the school. There is a return from Capita for the support we provide. The school should still be licensed... providing Capita received there money. You may lose out for the support side of things.
You should really speak to Capita, who I am sure will help you. You could PM Phil Neal here, who will give things a push, I'm sure.

Do we know if the school are aware of this? We are intending becoming a Academy in Sept 2012 and I want to make sure everything is covered.

We have been invloved with 3 schools that have become academies and in all cases there was a cost to "transfer" the license from the LA to the school under the new school name.
Then you have the option to pay the LA for support if they provide it or go direct to capita.

The school I was involved in had to purchase a new license when they became an academy as the LA one could not be transferred.
The school were aware of this as they contacted the LA and Capita to discuss it.

Thanks, I know the school will be contacting the LEA to find out what they need to buy into, but I wasn't too sure how detailed it was.
