We've recently had a couple of ipads purchased.
We've installed logmein to give staff access to a normal desktop, giving them full access to all of the tools they need (email/sims/office/network folders). it also avoids any syncing/copying of data problems.

So far so good and much cheaper than purchasing extra software addon's

I used Logmein for years before it was banned on the local Broadband connection!
I could work around it but I would be doing it contrary to the instructions I was given!
Also, you have to leave a Workstation on to connect to if you want full access to SIMS. Not what we want to do in the evenings/night when we have to run backups etc etc.

We've mostly been running on wifi during the school day within school.
Staff on duty can log BMR's and do attendance etc while around the school as well as check emails.

Should having machines logged on prevent an SQl backup? I know updates will be prevented when having users logged on.

W8 has fixed this and is much more accurate when using touch. As regards the screen. The RM Slate has a higher resolution @ 1366x768 and I have had no problems whatsover with input onto it.
Come back to the real world, W8 is majorly beta, we've got a good few years before it's mainstream and Capita supports it. The RM slate even in a special touch application is ok at best. Compare it to the iPad 1 and it's pants. If it was going to give PE staff a mobile option for SIMS, it would most likely be an ipad\itouch solution with emerge.

SIMS is shut down and then restarted as part of the night-time Backup etc procedures!

SIMS runs perfectly on our androids, at home and in school using Citrix secure access gateway.

We insalled SIMS in RM slate as CC4 client. Seems working fine for teacher's.

I think he is using EMERGE. We are using it and it's cool, prices shown above are correct. For us it works well with our funny week which was an issue when we trialled Bromcom's TWF. I think the pricing was similar though for just the mobile app, which incidentally i think includes web access too. A few grand a year. Both good options if you don't already have SLG which would be way more costly.

@zag - did you see the sticky thread at top? http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-sy...ms-access.html

@bossman doesn't your system from TASC work on mobile devices?

Remote access is good, but i always find it too small and miss the mouse and right click functionality.

Yes but we are on with another project which will make this redundant.

Remote desktop has all the functionality if used in conjunction with a laptop or netbook (works very well in fact).

As for our PE dept we are in the midst of IPhone testing with emerge app.

    Thanks everyone!

Ordered Groupcall Emerge for 15 uses this morning.

Bit expensive but testing the trial app was really good. Just hope it works as well in practice.

Sweet. The cutoff on price is at 28 right so you're halfway there.

I've found the timeout is problematic when you have no access to the server.
