    Anyone deploying SIMs with WPKG... how do you deal with updates?

    Hi all,

    I wondered if anyone is deploying SIMs to workstations using WPKG and if so how updates are dealt with. At the minute we are weighing up the advantages/disadvantages of login script vs. when sims is loaded.

    We have got SIMs deploying using WPKG absolutely fine, however, we are struggling with how best to deal with updates. I thought it would be as simple as when an update is available, incrementing the "revision" number on the package.xml file but that seems to make no difference. Anybody have any advice on how they achieve this?

    Thanks,
    Michael

    SIMS has its own update mechanism - we simply install the currently available version locally to workstations, then it updates itself. Check the application shorcut you're using to start SIMS - it should point to SIMSLoad.exe, not SIMS directly, that should do the updating part for you.

    We just increase the package version and it seems to work ok.
    Below is our package details
    <package id="simsapplication" name="Sims Application" revision="7.138.29.3" reboot="false" priority="5">
    <check type="file" condition="exists" path="%PROGRAMFILES%/SIMS/SIMS .net/Pulsar.exe" />
    <install cmd='%SOFTWAREROOT%\Applications\SIMS .net Application\v5.70.0.0\SIMSApplicationSetup.exe /S {QuietMode} {NoServerApps} [SIMSDotNetDirectory]="%PROGRAMFILES%\SIMS\SIMS .net"' />
    <install cmd='%SOFTWAREROOT%\Applications\SIMS .net Manual\v5.70.0.0\SIMSManualSetup.exe /S {QuietMode} {NoServerManuals} [SIMSDotNetDirectory]="%PROGRAMFILES%\SIMS\SIMS .net" [SIMSDirectory]="S:\SIMS"' />
    <upgrade cmd='%SOFTWAREROOT%\Applications\SIMS .net Application\v5.70.0.0\SIMSApplicationSetup.exe /S {QuietMode} {NoServerApps} [SIMSDotNetDirectory]="%PROGRAMFILES%\SIMS\SIMS .net"' />
    <upgrade cmd='%SOFTWAREROOT%\Applications\SIMS .net Manual\v5.70.0.0\SIMSManualSetup.exe /S {QuietMode} {NoServerManuals} [SIMSDotNetDirectory]="%PROGRAMFILES%\SIMS\SIMS .net" [SIMSDirectory]="S:\SIMS"' />
    <remove cmd='%SOFTWAREROOT%\Applications\SIMS .net Application\v5.70.0.0\SIMSApplicationSetup.exe /S {QuietMode} {Uninstall} {NoServerApps}' />
    </package>

    But you're the only person that gets on with it. Are you sure you're not a Capita Developer in your spare time?

    Vikpaw - have you seen some of Matt's posts - he definately doesn't work for us!

    We've installed SOLUS3 in around 100 schools now and although we had issues to start with, its now going well. We are still finding things that need resolutions with some LA level installations.

    Haha, charming. Yer, I do hate ONE\EMS, WAV, B2B and FMS. Still FMS is getting there, hows NRV coming along @PhilNeal?
