Hi there, long time no post!
Quick question, more of clarification really.
Installing FMS, completely safe yes? i was always lead to believe the client PC installation from S:\Sims\Setups\FMSApplicationSetup.exe or similar was completely harmless, and would never do any damage to the database or server's setup.
I have recently been told otherwise, and have been told it can write to the db on installation and break / corrupt things. obviously as this is a accounting package, it has raised some serious concerns. (not told this by a member of capita, just FYI)
So, i just wanted to check that the installation is completely safe. and running S:\Sims\Setups\FMSApplicationSetup.exe then editing / redirecting the fmsconnect.ini is all that is required.
Many thanks
Ben.

That is my understanding. I have run S:\Sims\Setups\FMSApplicationSetup.exe [same file/same path] on all of my Finance stations without issues for the workstations, the server or the SIMS database.
I also have not heard what you have been told [this of course does not mean that it is not true but I would say, based on my experience, that it was unlikely]
HTH.

12th May 2011, 09:06 PM #4 As far as I'm concerned its safe as superfletch says run FMSInst.exe from the FMS folder in setups

12th May 2011, 10:00 PM #5 FMSinst it is then! im guessing the SIMSinst executable is the best for SIMS aswell then?!

13th May 2011, 02:49 PM #6 Yep, SIMSInst will prompt you for the infrastructure installs, and it also installs the helps manuals and assessment resources.

Same here. We're using the following batch file to install FMS - the stuff with copying FMSConnect.ini around makes sure FMS can actually find it:
Code:
S:\SIMS\Setups\FMSApplicationSetup.exe
mkdir "C:\Program Files\SIMS\Finance"
copy "\\server1\Software\FMS\FMSConnect.ini" "C:\Program Files\SIMS\Finance"
copy "\\server1\Software\FMS\FMSConnect.ini" "c:\WINDOWS\system32"
copy "\\server1\Software\FMS\FMSConnect.ini" "c:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net"
echo Sims Directory=C:\Program Files\SIMS\FMSSQL>>C:\WINDOWS\sims.ini
copy "\\server1\Software\FMS\PDOXUSRS.NET" "C:\"
s:
cd S:\SIMS\Setups
call simsperm.bat DOMAIN\Security-Group-ADMIN
call simsperm.bat DOMAIN\Security-Group-SIMS
call simsperm.bat DOMAIN\Security-Group-SMT
call simsperm.bat DOMAIN\Security-Group-TEACH
SubInAcl /FILE "C:\PDOXUSRS.NET" /GRANT=DOMAIN\Security-Group-ADMIN=F

Reason: obfuscation

13th May 2011, 04:17 PM #8 @dhicks - did you mean to publish the names of your servers and your security groups? Tsk tsk.

Is it likely to cause problems?

Better late than never: just added some obfuscation.

26th March 2012, 01:32 PM #12 Just to confirm, if you use the newer fmsinst, it moves the PDOXUSRS file to the programdata folder on Win7.

26th March 2012, 03:39 PM #13 Does it? I've had loads of difficulty today and yesterday. Some machines running fine because it's creating and using a copy in the appdata\local\virtualstore
But two machines the ones that have the printers installed and share for the others, wont do this virtualstore business, so i had to reinstall, and as it was still going to root of C:, for this one machine / user, i've used the bdeadmin to alter the location to the program files\sims folder. It's working okay.
Had loads of issues with UAC, as the BDE config you see is different depending on whether you're logged in as admin / logged in as user / logged in as user with permissions over BDE.
Something is weird on those machines the permissions are not applying as the same user is fine going to the other machine. :S

26th March 2012, 08:05 PM #14 Yer, got a fresh Win7 machine, UAC on, installed FMS, copied the FMSconnect.ini across. Didn't even have a printer connected!! I think if you've got the FMS Spring 12 cd, it's got the fmsinst in it - if I remembered right, I used winrar to get to the files - it's a .zip, with a .iso with a self-extracting (wise) installer using zip compression which has the files in it... Innit.
Printer thing doesn't seem to like the Microsoft Office Image cruddy printer thing however.
Even easier via SOLUS3, define as a workstation wait a few mins, bosh. Done. Means even us men can multi task - just don't tell the missus!!

27th March 2012, 03:08 PM #15 Of course! Running the upgrade wont update my installers.
Or should it have done...? It updated my novasatellitesetup, so why not FMSInst?
My version is 1.594.1.0 modified last in February 2010! I did it from Upgrade ISO.
