Do the reports work from workstations? If so that is definitely the problem on the server.

Thanks to all who replied. The original message is down to the fact that Office isn't installed, which I can't do as I'm waiting for the school to sort out a site license. In the meantime, have tried from a desktop with Office installed, but no joy. I don't get the error message (as pointed out, it only means Office isn't installed) but can't connect to the document server.

    Hello,

I have a very similar problem (I think) to waldronm2000 and am yet to find a solution.

As far as I was aware (which isn't a massive amount of awarness), when migrating the sims database to a new server, you can do the following and it should work:

    - Detatch the database from old server and copy files to new server
    - Copy the DOCSTORAGE folder from the old server to the new server
    - Install sims server, workstation and document server from fresh installation media on the new server
    - Attach the sims database using dbattach on the new server, perform any upgrades to the db as required using dbupgrade
    - Overwrite the fresh DOCSTORAGE folder on the new server with the one from the old server and change the server name folder in the DOCSTORAGE folder to match the new server name

I have done this a number of times and it has worked ok.

On the latest migration I've got major problems with the reports. Weird thing about the old server, there was no "docstorage" folder, there was a folder called "documents" which seemed to be the docstorage folder, although how sims knew to use that when it wasn't called "docstorage" I have no idea.

So I've created a new docstorage folder on the new server in the correct location and I've put the folder that was the old servers name (which was in the unusual "documents" folder) into this new docstorage folder. I've then changed the name of that folder to match the new server's name. The only reports that work now are the capita ones. The schools old custom reports no longer run on server and workstations, I just get:

"Error: The system cannot find the file specified"

I have both the word and excel viewers installed on the server.

I've checked that the document server location is set to this new server in setups and the test runs ok. I've never had to change that bit anyway apart from when I've taken an image of a sims server and needed to change the host or ip to match the new server. Also, their old "documents" server which eventually has all those folders that are usually in the docstorage folder, also had a few other folders first. First was documents, then "sims" and "sims2008", in the sims folder is another folder called sims, then all the 00, 0a, 0b etc folders, in the sims2008 folder are 2 other folders, "SIMS" and "SIMS05", they both contain sets of the 00, 0a, 0b etc folders.

I have no idea what's going on here!

Can anyone help? Hope you figure it out waldronm2000.

Run the Dos routine from post No.4. This will stop the Documents problem and give you the correct location.

After you ran Dmconfig was the last line the correct path. Unless you get it exactly right it often still says Documents, so hasn't done the job.

As for the error, what office product have you got installed on that machine?

Yes the output from dmconfig was correct for both the docstorage location, which is D:\DOCSTORAGE in my case, and the backup location.

If you have run Dmconfig, allowed it to set up Docstorage (try to run a report) then copied the old files over... it should work.

After running Dmconfig you did restart the Document server??

    Thanks for your replies.

Yes I did restart the server service after running dmconfig, I even restarted the whole server.

Do you not think this is something to do with the strange structure of the "documents" folder from the old server?

The old Documents structure is a Red Herring. As long as Sims has setup the new structure of Docstorage it should work.

Have you checked paths in all ini files?

Which ini files should I be checking paths in?

This is what I have (installed to d: drive):

    D:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS\SIMS .net Document Server\SIMSDocumentServer_XXX-XXXX.config

    The server name is correct.

I would be inclined to un-install and reinstall the DMS.

    Sims.ini is a good start.

Ours seems to have started working with a server restart. Not sure why, but not going to look a gift horse in the mouth...
