If you do go for a cheap tablet, such as an Archos or Advent, make sure it is a capacitive screen. Resitive screens are a bit of a faff. The only comparable tablet to an Ipad out there are the moment, that I have played with, is the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The new Asus Prime looks nice and the Sony tablet is well built.

I agree with @SteveB - cheap wont be cheerful. I would love to get the new Transformer Prime, but it's a little dear and doesn't have 3G which is not a showstopper but can come in handy. I think i'm going to get a Galaxy Tab for testing.
Whatever I do, I just cant get the Windows Azure link to stay stable.
I keep having to restart the service every couple of days.
Is anyone else seeing this? It basically makes the system unusable for people over the internet :/
Just got the trial installed today. So far got it working on an iPod Touch 3rd Gen, an iPhone 4 and an iPad 2. All running latest iOS. Will be pushing out to an iPad 1, an iPhone 4s & some more iPod's again all running latest iOS on Monday.
On first impressions it looks good. Training the PE staff how to use it on Monday.
I'll keep you updated with how it goes.

Does anyone know how to find the Service URL it asks for?
There support line and given me a "fob off card" for the afternoon there all busy!

We're got a test on a couple of ipads at the moment. It's great, much more space to work with, so it's more efficient.
The service URL is for your local server where the groupcall software resides. Or if it's hosted, whatever URL they gave you. Are you just trying to do a demo?
Then, close / delete the app. Start again, when you first load it, it should ask you if you want to connect to the demo server and clicking yes should connect it for you. No config required.
New upgrade to include behaviour / achievement recording is imminent. Also, record minutes late.
Currently Trialling it, all was going well until today, we've got it running on Android 2.3 phones, iPhones & iPad, today took delivery of an Android Tablet running ICS and the Play Apps store says its not compatible, I'm waiting for GroupCall Support to phone me back.
Groupcall phoned back and got me to download it from their website, now working, on with testing.

I tested out the Beta with behaviour, found a tiny bug, but it's really impressive overall. Can even attach videos and photos to the incident. So cool.

Also have they updated the ipad app yet?This update will comprise of two parts, firstly the Emerge App itself will automatically notify you through App store notifications to update Emerge (the app Store update was live as of yesterday evening). Secondly, the Emerge server that sits in your school extracting and writing information to and from your MIS will need to be updated. This is an automatic update that will be done through our support team at Groupcall.
The easy question 1st, Emerge HD with the new behaviour and and achievement functionality is in the App store.
In terms of the upgrade to the server software, all Emerge customers will receive an email within the next 7 days detailing when their specific upgrade is due to take place. These upgrades will commence 24th sept, and complete nationally by week ending 19th October.
