Eportal services wont start after being stopped unless you re-enter password?

    Hi All,

I have a strange problem with Eportal. If we stop the services (which is usually done via a scheduled task every day) the services both won’t start unless you re-enter the account password. It always says the credentials are incorrect. We use document storage so have to use an account with access to the share where the document storage files are located. I have always used DOMAIN\Administrator in the past but have also tried using different accounts to resolve this problem.

I know the password is correct and the only dependencies of the service is the other Serco service.

It's been like this since we moved Serco to our new server with is running 2008 Standard 64 bit. Serco say they have never come across this problem before and advised researching it but I can't find anything.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

    Thanks very much in advance.

    Gary

Have you tried using the local system account?

Why are you restarting the service everyday?

    Hi,

It works fine with the local account but then the document storage can't work.

Serco generally performs better if you restart regulary and we often have changes made in Facility which wont filter through without the restart. We find it will just fall over if not restarted for around 5 days. We do have a hell of a lot of access though (students, parents, etc)

    Thanks

If the doc storage is on the same server as ePortal you could try setting it so the local account has permission over the doc storage folders.

Didn't realise documnet storage was dependant on that password.

Works fine here with the local account.

Document storage is located same server here so that probably gets around the problem for us.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

It is on the same server so maybe this will fix the problem. What should the local system account be listed as? system, service, etc? System currently has full control.

    Cheers.

On the share or the service?

There should be a radio button on the service properties to choose the local account. (Unless things are different on 2008)

I only have the server administrators group and mis users with access to the share but the user is SYSTEM

On the share....we have system with full control already but if I set the eportal services to use the local account, document storage can't be accessed....thinking back, I don't remember having this issue when we use to use Server 2003 and that I believe used the local account for the services. Maybe it's a 2008 or 64 bit issue?

We have eportal and the docstore on the same server and ours is set to use the Local System Account on each of the services property page. We run 32bit Server 2008. I don't suppose it could be an issue with UAC running? We have ours turned off.

Serco recommend you restart the services daily, they even provide a batch file that you add to the Task Scheduler! Poor design me thinks

It tends to be the TomCat service running away with memory if you don't restart it daily. ePortal does its own mini re-starts and reloads its cached data daily anyway so your just giving it a good hand in doing so, but it is for TomCats benifit (not a Serco product).

What John said - thanks John.
Try the local system account. I've seen people using 2008 R2 (R2 is 64bit only) and doc store without a problem, so i'm sorry that doesn't answer your question, but perhaps it helps. I'll have a look at a 2008 when I get chance and post back to let you know. Anyone else, don't be shy!

    Mic @ Serco

    Hi all,

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. I will give thanks to all.

What a strange problem this has turned out to be.....originally, we were using the default system account but couldn't open any document storage files. Called Serco, they advised to change to the Administrator account and this is what the Document Storage instructions state to do. Changed it, fixed the problem straight away but since then have had the problem whereby if you restart the services, you have to enter the Administrator password which obviously was mucking up the scheduled task batch file. I have put it back to the local account and now it's working fine....without changing anything at all! Maybe it was a bug that has been fixed in the latest build of eportal. Either way, we're running as usual.

Thanks again for all the advise/help. Much appreciated.

    Gary
