I'm nothing to do with the company in any way, but I don't want to be accused of spamming so you'll have to scroll up to see it.
Believed. I tested it last year, it works really well and is cheap, giving access to assessment for grades / report writing too. Very fast.
They also have a parental access portal, which can be a hosted solution (so in a type of cloud depending on your definition!) - MCAS.

Always like their interface, and ease of use.

Access to sims for non apple devices...

    Hi

Just thought it was worth posting a few comments on this thread to clarify the points raised.

    1. There will be versions of Emerge (iphone app to access sims data) on other platforms including android this year, before the next bett. This is being worked on now.

    2. You don't need any other Groupcall software to use Emerge, so if you are using schoolcomms, intouch or any other school messaging system, it has no impact on that.

    3. There will be a version of emerge to run on a mac by q2 (this year).

    Thanks
    Lawrence (Groupcall)

But what about the platform of the future? WP7?
It is compliant with Sharepoint 2010 and Silverlight right now!

Now was I serious or not ................. ??

It is a very valid question though. It outsold Android over the Xmas rush!

Source? Everything I've read shows Android outselling WP7 15:1 or more...

    Source?

Microsoft is out with its first official sales number for the new Windows Phone 7 smartphones: 1.5 million in six weeks.

The number was revealed by Achim Berg, vice president of business and marketing for Windows Phones, in a Q&A posted to Microsoft’s website. Berg says the number is, “in line with our expectations – especially when compared to other new platform introductions.”

While that’s a fraction of the sales being reported by Google and Apple (there are currently around 300,000 Android devices being activated daily and 3 million iPhones were sold in the device’s first three weeks on the market)
From here: Microsoft Reveals Windows Phone 7 Sales Figures

It just made me laugh that they didn't see fit to put copy and paste into the initial release after the absolute press slaughter that apple got over the same thing in the 1st iPhone.

And hey, silverlight support! good to know they're adding platforms that are dying a death ;-)

Android is now the most sold platform in europe at the moment - it has finally overtaken Nokia. Windows

I'll see if i can find the source

    Thanks for the clarification.

    queries:

    1) the reasons for iphone being first with the app is the added security it provides. what sort of extra security / logon procedures will be required with android or other systems?

    2) to use groupcall emerge, you need the comms / management software hooked up to sims. can that be installed on any machine or does it have to 'live' with sims.

    3) will that version, as i guess it's browser based have access to assessment - that would be a real winner on any platform but certainly for those of us with mac installations.

    Thanks, to answer your questions..

    1. Cant answer in detail at the moment. What I can say is that the security on Emerge for the iPhone was our top consideration, there is no point doing something like this unless you feel VERY comfortable with the security of pupil data. This same thinking is being applied to the Android version.

    2. The Xporter/Emerge Server ("management/comms software") is the school end of the solution, it needs a live connection to SIMS (i.e. installed on a machine with SIMS installed).

    3. The mac version is not browser based, it is a native mac app. It is very much in our plans to have access to accessment soon. Emerge was designed as a framework, so its very extendable without having to revert to a developer.

    Hope that helps.
    Lawrence

No it isn't? They've said they're not putting as much effort into it but they're still working on it. They XAML system is being used all over the place, in WPF, on WP7 phones and in new frameworks and projects that MS are working on. So, even if they do go crazy and kill silverlight, XAML will still live on.

I meant as a technology. Obviously people are still going to use it. But people still use COBAL and that's been dead for decades. If Silverlight isn't dead, at the very least it's a dead end. Along with all .net desktop technologies. HTML 5 anyone? Open standards will conquer!

Ok, how is it a dead technology then? Open standards will continue to improve, but they take about 10 years longer generally to appear in a stable and used format. HTML5 is not expected to be fully finished as a spec until 2012, and full implementations of it aren't expected until 2022! Whereas, look at what Flash and Silverlight offer here and now.
