System Manger should be ready for field trials by April 2011.

Wow! Only taken 3 years Phil! But having said that I know you were waiting to have most modules up to .net before taking this on, be very interested to see this in action when it is ready!

Graham it has taken too long - in our defence I would point out that some things have been delivered such as AD integration and SOLUS which were part of the SM vision.

In actual fact Phil I fully agreed with holding off on SM until everything was together in .net, having the facility to start from scratch and not be held back by legacy issues as such. AD integration was a fantastic step forward, and I was sorry I left the school before I got to see SOLUS 3 introduced.

    Hurray!!

I went on a systems managers course about a year ago and the training guy was pretty embarrassed to be teaching the old system manager that looks like it was built for windows NT

My question of why the user list didn't respond to auto jump (like every other windows program available for the last 10 years) went unanswered

One will no doibt be reporting back in the near future on how well Discover works on different machines. I will mainly be testing on my own which does have a separate graphics card - but I will no doubt try it on others with integrated boards etc.
All will be revealed in due course!

I kind of struggle to see how even in a large school with over 2500 students, any data analysis could be described as requiring 'massive' amounts of processing. And given that these days even modest PC's can perform billions (a billion being a thousand million) of calculations per second, isn't it far more likely that the real reason for poor performance in schools MIS systems is far more mundane ... poor programming and poor use of the resources available.

    er no.
Capita have an 80% share of a MIS market which "over the 5 year lifetime the costs to schools of MIS licensing, maintenance and support is likely to exceed
£550 million at 2009/10 prices." They shouldn't be able to get away with it. Especially considering procurement is "uncompetitive as a result of a virtual absence of Open Journal of the European Union (OJEU) compliant procurement activity"

    Yes and no.

Yes it is reasonable to expect them to appear. But that also means any reasonable development process will seek to identify and eliminate them as part of the quality process. The description of something relatively trivial as "requiring massive amounts of processing" simply helps to set the quality bar low, excusing poor practice by citing specious causes.

It is the general rule that after a certain price point software gets worse as the price increases. Things that a reasonably-priced app would never get away not fixing with because their customers would desert them can be got away with once you start talking in the tens of thousands and go up.

Oracle* and SAP are good examples of the phenomenon.

*the storage is nice, but they acquired that from Sun.

Brilliant, I get to tell SMT that not one of our PCs will be up to running SIMS, even the 100 we bought only 3 months ago. 4gb of RAM, are you kidding me? The SQL server isn't even using 4gb so why on earth would a workstation use it. Maybe the govt. should be looking at Capita in its budget cuts?...
