    SIMS Interview Questions

    Hi all,

I applied for a job as a SIMS administrator and I want to know what kind of technical questions they would ask for that post.

    Any help appreciated.

Not the best set of questions but we have used these.

    1) Why have you applied for this job?
    2) How does your experience, skills and qualifications make you a suitable candidate for this post?
Supplementary: What strengths would your current employer and colleagues say you had?
    3) Everyone gets stumped from time to time when trying to resolve a technical problem, how would you go about finding an answer to a problem you could not resolve
    4) Detail any experience of installing/upgrading SIMS software and the essential steps taken to ensure success
    5) Imagine that you take a call on the Helpdesk from a user claiming that the executable file for an application or its associated database cannot be found on the network. Explain what may have gone wrong and how you would resolve the problem.
    6) What do you feel are the components of a good training course/presentation to teach attendees about software? ie. what makes a course successful?
Supplementary: give examples of a training presentation or course you have provided.
    7) Could you describe some of the current issues facing schools here in **** - or more generally in education - as they strive to improve their performance
    8) Give one example of a technical problem you have resolved recently, and how you went about trouble shooting it to a successful conclusion.
    9) You have a new employee in a school and a new user of SIMS or another business application. However, you find that they, and they alone, cannot gain access to it. Explain why this might be the case.
    10) Describe some of the essential management issues that need to be taken into account with looking after a large database such as SIMS in a school environment.
    11) How would you persuade sceptical, short of cash Headteachers that they should invest further by making more use of Management Information/Data from systems such as SIMS? Describe how you would support the school to move the use of SIMS further forward.
    12) This role requires the individual to operate both independently and as an active member of a team. Give one example of where you have made a major contribution to the work of any team and changed in a significant way either its operation or a business process.
    13) How would you deal with a difficult caller, someone who really isn’t listening to what you are saying? Give examples of difficult calls you have managed to resolution.
    14) Two clients call, one after the other, both with extremely urgent problems, both require an immediate site visit - what would you do?
    and....

    1) Explain any four of the following elements of a Database:

    a) Field:
    b) Record:
    c) Tables:
    d) Data Types:
    e) Validation:
    f) Look-ups:

    2) What is the purpose of the Data Protection Act and why is it welcome?

    3) Schools are free these days to look to the commercial world for their SIMS support. You hear that a school is actively seeking to drop our service. What steps would you take to ensure that this customer was retained by the Local Authority support unit?

    4) A school reports that their SIMS Server has been stolen. What measures could you take to reassure the school and the pupils’ parents and get them back to effective working as rapidly as possible?
    Hope this helps.

All good questions posted above there!

The only other technical SIMS related questions that I can think of may be about using DBattach, restoring your database in case of an emergency, what backup strategy would you use?

What about any VLE's which may be in use which pull data out of SIMS? How would that be maintained?

Are you fine with researching new ways to do things & performing occasional tasks such as the SQL 2008 migration?

    1) How would you troubleshoot SIMS performance from physical server > SIMS client app?
    2) What tools would you use, what would you be looking for, where would you start looking?
    3) How would you baseline "acceptable performance"?
    4) How (if you're not the sysadmin responsible for SIMS) would you work with said sysadmin to troubleshoot the above?

Depends on what the job spec is really. SIMS Administrator would (personally) point to timetabling and general data input (I'm going to get slap for saying that). Where as Network Manager would be excepted to do SIMS upgrades etc. Could you post the job spec?

:Slap: Depends if it is a school or LA.

Yeah, it really depends. We have multiple SIMS Gurus depending on what (exams, assessments, timetabling, finance, etc) you're after. I specialise in "it's all gone a bit wierd, help" type problems as well as managing the underlying infrastructure.

    Thankyou all,

Special thanks to Creese for your detailed list of questions and very quick response and thanks to sarconia for your additions.

I do not have real time experience as SIMS administrator, but I have downloaded open source named open SIS, and I am practising.

This will be my first job after my maternity break, so I am very nervous.
Normally can I know the procedure of the Interview for SIMS admin in schools.
    Any information will be great.

    Cheers

It would depend on the level you join at. We generally find that people with little or no experience are better, they can then be trained up. Anyone with some knowledge of schools would help them. (Capita) SIMS is changing so fast that no one person knows all modules and we each do our own bit with overlaps. I joined from a school 6 or 7 years ago and only one has joined from another authourity.

    Good Luck

Difficult to get unless you get a log into 'Supportnet' (SupportNet) the Capita site. They have all the training data and documentation. I may be wrong but I don't think it possible to get a logon unless you are in a school or LA.

    The modules are for example:
    Attendance
    NovaT Timetables
    Exams
    Cover
    Dinner Money (primary)
    Assessment
    Personnel
    Pupil Details
    System Manager
    Reports
    and so on.......

    Thankyou so much.
So there is no other way that I get some knowledge on SIMS.
So i think there is no chance to practise by installing the SIMS s/w, which I think I cant get it for free, even for study purpose.

It is difficult. Which is not an answer.

Installing is not simple even if you had the means. You could see if your local support has training sessions but to honest we have usually charged for that. You wouldn't be able to practice on a live system for obvious reasons.

I'm sorry i can't help more than that. That could try contacting the user PhilNeal on here he might be able to give you pointers. If he can't, no one can.

It's unfortunately one of those things that you really can only learn from doing it, even if you managed to get a test SIMS system and all the wonderful training material it never comes close to doing it for real, even then each school is different. Thankful SIMS .net is really easy to pick up, with the exception of Nova-T (avoid at all costs would be my advise).

Make sure your all update with the data protection and all that good stuff. You seem to have a strong will to learning new things, hopefully that'll come across and you should be fine.

    Good luck
