I've been trying to Install sql 2008 express edition on a 2008 SP1 x64 box and I'm having real difficulty.
Everything passes ok except apparently the server needs a restart before installation can continue.
I restart, and the same message appears prompting me to restart the server. I've had a look around and the main cause seems to be in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\PendingFileRename
Apparently deleting any entries here can solve the issue but they're not present on the server.
Any ideas?

22nd March 2010, 07:03 PM #2 prolly a daft idea and never done it before but when you install sql server, does it not load a system tray icon near the windows clock ? If so if you right click on that do you not get any options ref configure / options or even restart ??

22nd March 2010, 07:26 PM #3 It seems this is a big issue that hasn't really been resolved:
Setup of SQL Server 2008: Restart required but I have restarted
I doubt I'm going to find logitech camera drivers there, but I'll take a look tomorrow.

You're right that would probably apply post-installation but only for the sql instance. This prerequisite checker is saying the whole server needs restarting, re: above link. and before installation of sql.

22nd March 2010, 09:20 PM #4 I think I had this same issue with SQL express, I think I got round it as follows. I restarted which did not seem to work but then tried installing directly from the MSI which then worked as far as I can remember.
