We've always had a problem with SIMS auto updating itself. It used to work long long ago, before i came to this job, but for the last 2 years it has refused to update for anyone other than admins.
Even the girls in the office who have local admin rights have to manually run the setup to get it to update.
I know this is very vague but i have no idea where to start as we were told off our LEA that it will not auto update, but talking to a techy in the same LEA as us he has said his updates.
The way i see it its got to be a problem with the server side as regardless of right/priveliges auto update does not work.
Any help

Make sure that the user has full access to 'C:\Program Files\SIMS' and 'C:\IDAPI' and you should be OK.
All the girls in the office have admin rights so it cant be a permissions thing. Thats why im completely confused.
We've had it for years and its yet to be used by anyone but the office and a few smt lol
When it comes ao auto updating the SIMS server is just a glorifed file server.
It's the SIMSLoad program residing on the client hard drive which calls the various installers on the S:\SIMS\Setups network drive.
When you say doesn't work. Does SIMSLoad actually check for updates when you click on the icon. I know that in some cases Capita have advised calling Pulsar directly becasue of issues with Sophos. You would zstill need another shortcit for SIMSload if this was the case.
Depends how it was installed originally too. Have you tried on a conventionally instaled PC?
simsperm sets the access rights correctly, there are security issues to giving full admin rights.
With a normal installation of SIMS, the SIMSLOAD link is included in the shortcuts to SIMS (both on the desktop and within the SIMS Applications link from the Start Menu.) Some people, however, remove this link to SIMSLOAD for a variety of reasons. If SIMSLOAD is removed, then the workstation will not automatically update.
Some schools do include the SIMSLOAD as part of the login script.
Full documentation can be found from our corporate website - www.capitaes.co.uk/solus (click on the link to documentation on the left hand side.)
SIMSPERM.bat does modify the permissions on the workstation to allow upgrades to files on the workstation to take place. This is also fully documented.

Hi Toby, good to see more capita staff on here
I seached supportnet the other day for more information about SIMSPERM, but couldn't find anything - could you point me in the direction of the doucmentation please?
I have just posted another document to our corporate website, which gives more details regarding SIMSPERM.bat - I hope this is of some use.
The link is:

I am in the process of reviewing all of our SOLUS & Upgrade related documentation, and will update the corporate website with new documents early next year.

Any chance you could rename that bat file as a little frind of mine who saw that on my screen missed reading it as SIMS Permissions.bat and read it as SIM SPERM.bat I must admint quick glancing over it does make it look rather crude, or is it that im feeling frazzled on a Monday afternoon and trying to find humor over the latest Wii Joke![]()
@Toby: thanks for the doc, had what I needed.
I've seen a few people mention setting the relevant sims permissions via group policies instead of using the bat file.
So I've had a quick go at it, will test it more this week.
But if anyone can see any issues I'd be glad of any comments.
(I know its not linked to anything - yet)
