We have our Sims server running on a new VM on ESX 4 and it goes like a stabbed rat now (compared to when it was physical on older hardware)

I can agree with you both on this we have got better results running virtual also, to quote SSirruuk2 "it goes like a stabbed rat now".

i know a few people did a P2V conversion, but i'd prefer a clean install.
ideally with the full install CD / iso from capita, but your existing setups folder is enough.
also, if you are planning it now, it's a good time to move to SQL 2k8 and thus not have any remnant of older versions.

    That is the plan..

I was interested to know how people setup their VMs i.e. does the VM Sit on a SAN or Local SAS drives? or Does anyone have the VM Load Balanced across more then 1 host? Do you have a specific Hardware config for the VM (e.g. specific CPU setting or isolated Network port for VM etc)? How many other VMs sit on the same Host and what do they do? These kinds of questions, more how the VM is setup, not so much how SIMS/FMS is setup within the VM.

We did a P2V using SCVMM and it worked perfectly, took a while but has been running excellent since.
