Right, this gets better and better… let me explain…

As Sims has always been slow at loading taking about 10-15 seconds on a wired client before the logon box appeared. I thought it wouldn’t hurt to monitor the network on my PC before moving on to the laptop. Surprising my PC was also downloading 170MB of data just as the laptop did, and before you ask there were no updates to install!

Following Mcshammer advice I ran pulsar.exe and Sims fired up within 1 second. Then I ran SIMSLoad.exe again and Sims loaded in a slightly time but still about 1 second. So I asked the office staff to restart Sims and both of their computer loaded Sims within 1 second as well and that’s a record for this school.

So what was it that caused the Sims clients to download the updates every time SIMSLoad.exe was run?

I'll take the laptop home tonight and try again with the VPN. I have a feeling it will work this time!

    1 word - Antivirus

When Simsload starts up, it checks some version info on the server side. A fair few AVs will see your computer accessing a file, and scan the file... so downloading the entire 170MB package. I've put in exceptions in AV for the remote SIMS directory, and load time is much reduced. This may be where to look next.

    Cheers

No, it's not that. Sims has been excluded.

I'm surprised that there's still 170MB being brought down then. Does it still grab 170MB after a restart of the machine (not just restart if SIMs)? Have you tried seeing what program is grabbing the data using process explorer or similar (I'd guess the files it's grabbing are in your remote SIMs directory in the setups subdirectory)? Just for completeness, have you tried disabling AV on a test machine and trying?

    Cheers

Since running Pulsar.exe Sims is working better than ever, so I'm happy about that. But I would like to know why all the admin machine were affected in this way.

Just remember that when you have a SIMs upgrade on your server, you'll need to run via simload.exe once on the clients to drag the new version down.

Yes that's my whole point. Now running SIMSLoad it says "Upgrading Workstation" for around half a second when before is was displaying for 15 seconds on every Sims machine and every time Sims was run.

Hmm, for the record what is Pulsar supposed to do? I never got around to finding out when I used to use SIMS.

Pulsar is the SIMS.net main executable. SIMSLoad is the pre-run updater.
