All of the guys at Bromcom are helpful and we get our problems resolved much quicker than calling the capita helpdesk.

Just my thoughts but I hope they are useful.

    Kind Regards

    Hi Clark,

I am working with Neil Cheshire (ex bromcom) who has started at my school. We have already discussed the Bromcom solution with our line manager (but he wasn't too keen on the idea).

    Thanks for your help anyway.

    Mark

What MIS system are you now using Kiran? SIMS, CMIS or your own system?

    Thanks

Thumbs up Have a no obligation demo from bromcom

    Hi Mark,

If you have Neil Cheshire with you then I would definately approach Bromcom for a demonstration of their software to your line manager and SLT and seriously consider it. Neil is a legend and knows the system inside and out... he has been looking after us for a few years and I was terribly dissapointed when I heard he was leaving as he knows the system really well and can make it do some clever things.

I would also consider looking at the behaviour module as something to add to your system at a later date as this is extremely powerful and when we were looking for a e-registration system this was certainly on the agenda from the outset... no point in getting staff used to 2 systems, we have got the registration module and the behaviour element is just another tab in the app, this makes training and actually using the system very easy for staff and has saved us lots of whining from staff as its intuitive.

I sound like I work for Bromcom... I dont!! but I cannot stress how well it fits into our organisation and I would at least have them in for a demo and don't discount it so early on.

    Kind Regards
    Clark

Sims.net - we use to have 4 different systems for different things, e.g. attendance, behaviour, reporting, tracking, pupil data - but now we have consolidated all of this to Sims.net!!!

The only problem we have with Lesson Monitor is getting staff to take the register!!

    Hi Clark,

Don't get me wrong, I am not against Bromcom! It seems good to me! At the moment, we are stuck between a rock and hard place with SIMS.net and the TEAM bolt on. I have never really been a fan of SIMS/SIMS.net, although it has improved of late.

Saying that the August upgrade seems to have slowed down .net startup considerably! I like lightweight easy to deploy/maintain apps, quite often centrally controlled (web based apps are great if programmed well..although can be clunky at times, esp when working with forms).

Major problems at the moment seem to be sync between SIMS and Team, espicially the graphical timetable...which is resolved using the FROM SIMS module. This is specced to run at night, through a vbs script, and sometimes it works, but quite often it cocks up. When run manually it is fine

Can I just ask tech specs of schools running Sims.NET over RDP/TS for registration.

I've played with Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services and think its brilliant. The transparency and quick set up meant I had a working application in no time at all. However, in terms of support - what is supported and works?

    Is Sims.NET supported on a 64bit OS?
Is Sims.NET supported on Windows Server 2008?
Is Sims.NET supported over Terminal Services?

I've often asked the question to .ICT but at the time they didn't really give me an answer.

In order to get this working, i'm going to need to run 64bit Windows Server 2008. Also, SSL-Explorer works a treat as a way of allowing secure remote access for staff to work in Sims.NET. Well .ICT then said "We have our own Secure VPN Solution that you'd need to use." I feel confident with SSL-Explorer. It does the same job. I should get pricing on that shortly, but I'd imagine its expensive.

Yes Capita have now stopped support for Server 2000 and now do support server 2008

Is Sims.NET supported over Terminal Services?

Yes this is now supported and there are several authorities using terminal server who are usually more than happy to discuss

Yes, 64-bit server OSs are supported. 64-bit client OSs are, I believe, unsupported.

According to a presentation given to Somerset Network Managers a little while back, the answers are:

    Yes - server side only.
    Yes
Not officially, yet. But supposedly coming.

We have it running on Server 2k3 32bit TS at the moment, and don't need to change to anything more beefy just yet. Oh, and we use Citrix, so could extend it to be used via external HTTPS connections if we so wished (which we don't, as we will shortly be using the Learning Gateway for external access).

Your best bet is to try things out thoroughly. Set up a test server and thrash it.
