If there's one thing I don't miss in my old job, it's SIMS
Always a fun experience to be had!
*taps foot* still waiting for this to appear in SOLUS. There's usually a message on Supportnet if it's not going to be released on time, but nothing so far today. I like to at least have it downloaded on time so that we can put it on even if the LEA plug the hoover in and cut off our internet access.
Also, I noticed a fantastic bit of news on supportnet today:
Basically, the PDFs are going to be accessed from a share instead of slung around your network. Surely a good move 'cos I've never met anyone non-technical who's ever RTFM for ANY software. On the downside it does get us a little further away from being able to stop mapping a drive for SIMS (S: in our case; N: in the example). IIRC it's only Nova that was holding us up on that front.Technical Improvements to the SIMS.net August 2008 Main release
In order to improve SIMS.net Client upgrade speeds the SIMS 2008 August Main release will be putting the Handbooks (*.pdf's) once on the central SIMS server rather than on each individual client workstation.
This should not require you to change anything, however if you have created your own shortcut to these manuals on a workstation (rather than using the links inside SIMS which will automatically be remapped), you will need to change it to N:\SIMS\Documentation (where N:\ is the network mapping of the SIMS Central Server).
Existing SIMS Handbooks will remain in each SIMS Client workstation until the SIMS 2009 March Main release when they will be removed.
Between the August 2008 and March 2009 releases further technical improvements to SIMS will be made and I will post a news announcing them before each release.
Product Manager (Technical and Releases)
Presumably they could change to a UNC path at some point or make them load out of DocStorage.
How's it going if you applied it?
I came in to do it yesterday (11th Aug) and it wasn't in SOLUS. Rung helpdesk and was told there was a problem with it and they were having a meeting that afternoon to discuss what to do. They also said it was needed for results day!!
Waiting for a call back to say what their cunning plan is!
STOP PRESS: IT NOW IS ON SOLUS. Spoken to helpdesk and they reckon it will be fine to apply.
Ah well here goes!

Do you have to do this update before GCSE results day as I can see it sitting waiting in Solus like some diseased puppy and as usual our LEA Support have not been in touch at all....!?
According to philneal its only optional for English and Welsh schools.. so sounds like no we dont have to update before results day.
But i checked today.. and have decided to back up everything like normal and run the update so will be posting in the other thread if any problems occur.

Well, here goes nothing........................
Hmm... a SIMS.net update a few days before exams results come through and the version number of Examinations Organiser becomes 6.66 - someone is having a laugh surely?!
So back to topic - If we 'have' to apply the update (English school - no A Levels) how do we test if it's going to actually work on exams day?
Our SIMS Support team isn't aware of an Update in August
Is this a blessing maybe.. or will that mean that the damn thing gets downloaded without them even knowing!!
The best bit is that i'm ona half day on Results day then off for 2 weeks on Honeymoon
If it goes T*ts up......
me, it actually worked, tomorrows results should be fun fun fun.
