Firstly Capita software using .NET FRAMEWORK

    WHICH IS MICROSOFT

Except there will be issues using open source software with it.

    It's not Capita, it's Microsoft.

    Next, to solve this problem.

GET MICROSOFT WORD VIEWER and MICROSOFT EXCEL VIEWER
They are FREE to download from Microsoft Downloads ONLINE
you can even get a CD

This makes the reports run. I have tested it.
Install OpenOffice over the top, job done.

You've missed the issue with the non-standard XML files though. They have a line which forces them to open in Word rather than $default_editor. They should be just plain xml files and the opening details left to the sysadmin to deal with (setting .xml files to open in OpenOffice is easy enough).

An application written in .net should not prevent it passing information to Open Office, this is not an MS issue, SIMS.net should drag the info from the SQL server and pass the information on i fail to see why it is Microsofts fault in this instance.

It isn't beating them up. It is being something called 'a customer'. We have demands, they should listen to them and take them into account if they wish to keep our business.

If the latter, do you have much contact with SIMS.net? Do you have much contact with schools and do you ask them how they feel that they have to pay for licenses for MS Office just to continue to use SIMS.net?

And saying 'zzzz' is a bit weak to be honest. Present your case rather than just trying to make those who actually have problems look like they're causing trouble...

I feel localzuk is making a valid point that should at least be considered.

If a school want's to use SIMS they have to buy SQL server + CAL's (pretty expensive) then Windows on every desktop to then have to buy MS Office as well just to view the reports is a very expensive extra requirement when there is a perfectly good free alternative. I believe that Capita are missing the point here they should offer OO support and I suspect they would be positioning themselves more competitively in the market especially as OO use increases and their competitors don’t support it.

    ???

SQL license? What's wrong with Express? Does any go over the 4gb limit? Is anyone using 64bit edition of Windows with more then 4gb ram installed?

Anyway... I like opensource. I like Microsoft, when they work.

Our Db is bigger than that and express is limited to 1 CPU

    Over 4gb??!?

I've had a secondary school, using all the modules, since .net came out, over 130 staff, 1,500 students. That's only 2.5GB!! They pulled the attendance date from Bromcom, so there over 8yrs of attendance data and long with the usall stuff. (25 lessons per week + AM\PM)

I've heared of people clustering SQL... that was interesting.

I would argue the beniefts of using SQL. Most schools get SQL because they have a education licensing agreement which gets them SQL for pennies, and the windows desktop pack, or whatever it's called, comes with a sql connect license.

As for the CPU, I see the point, but I would image you would have to do a real time log to see if it's worth it. But I mean if you can get it cheap, it's worth the extra cost, espe for those Q6600

Errr i meant 2.5 Gb we went over the 2Gb limit of MSDE a while ago. We still needed full SQL though express isn't upto a deployment of our size with Lesson Monitor as well. Express cannot use more than 1 GB of RAM at a time for queries either our performance was noticibly improved when we moved to full SQL.
