Ooh, ooh, I got one, I got one! Anyone seen this error message before (comes up when trying to start the Exams module on a recently updated workstation - every other workstation seems to run the exams module okay):

I'm now uninstalling-and-reinstalling SIMS on the workstation to see if that sorts the problem.

Nope, that didn't fix it. Time for a new PC...

    Found this on Capita Support:

    Code:
KB62140 - Automation Error when accessing Exams Organiser
    Created 06/11/2006
    Last Updated 04/12/2007

    Affected Products Examinations Organiser
    Notes
Automation Error when accessing Exams Organiser
Unable to log into Exams Organiser

    Happening on one workstation
    Additional Notes
This happens when Microsoft Updates have not been run on the affected workstation.
We recommend that the Windows Updates are run regularly.
    Advice
    1. Run a Windows Update on the affected machine via Internet Explorer - Tools | Windows Update

    2. Uninstall Sims Infrastructure via Add/Remove Programs

    3. Install Sims Infrastructure by running e.g. S:\SIMS\SETUPS\SimsInfrastructureSetup.exe

    4. Locate the SIMS .net folder and rename this to SIMSold.

    5. Run SIMSApplicationSetup.exe

Yep. All other workstations seem fine (so far...), it's just this one that's causing problems. The workstation has now been updated with Windows XP Service Pack 3 and all the updates that Windows Update can provide, although it wasn't when SIMS was first upgraded, causing SIMS to give an error message about the installed version of the .net framework. I wonder if that might be causing the problem? Either that, or my first guess would be something to do with the exam results data that gets read in from the "examin" folder (formats changed?).

Is it possible they've accidentally made Exams require .net 3? That supportnet article would be much more helpful if they told you which update was causing it to barf so we don't have to install world+dog.

We often have to put these updates out straight after release to fix existing urgent problems, so I'm enjoying sitting back and waiting for c0ckups to be fixed this time before I lay waste to our SIMS workstations! All our workstations should be on .net v2 by now 'cos May needed it.

No, the workstation now has every single Windows update, ever, installed on it, and still refuses to load the Exams module - SIMS has gotten itself confused somewhere along the line, the easiest option is going to be to simply wipe the workstation and reinstall everything. To be fair, this should have been done before anyway - after all, it's not unreasonable for a Windows-based application to expect an up-to-date version of Windows.

I've seen that error before on a couple of our workstations. I tended to logon as myself with full administrative rights on the machine and run Exams Organiser as me and it works fine.

Then when I log off and the Exam officer logs on it works fine for them - it sounds to be a permissions issue but I can't think what, the exams officer has full rights to the SIMS folder on the workstation.

Users need a few things on top of rights to the local SIMS folder. Have a dig around in the contents of simSperm.bat to see what it tweaks:

    simsperm.bat - Google Search

That said, the May release of FMS also needed write access to system32 which was an unexpected surprise from our friends at Capita! AFAIK there isn't an FMSperm.bat, and if there was I suspect it would open up more than I'd be happy with.

Ah! Yes, that explains it - I'll have to try that first thing tomorrow! Thanks.

We had that following the May update with the Exams Module.

The only fix I could do was to rename the old SIMS. NET folder and re-install SIMS with SIMSINST.EXE

This solved the problem for us.
