It's the kind of project that overruns and dies from scope creep, even if it's probably a good idea

I've just found it waiting in my inbox. Thanks Phil.

    SPDP stopped.

Probably means DX is also stopped (how can you have an exchange going nowhere).

    No definite timescale on this.

A mountain? I don't seem to recall it's demise being the popular view when it was discussed here, but hey, I told you so.

    Nice.

Let me ask you, does it come as a welcome piece of news to you?

Not a loaded question genuine reaction to this news (and completely aside from your opinions on my writing style)

This was doomed when the minister that wanted it stalled on signing the project off earlier this year.

Well, it is a loaded question to ask is it "welcome" news. I always welcome news. Why, it would be so very boring otherwise, wouldn't you agree sir?

Very early on in my career I was asked after proposing the development of a large database system, "So, pcstru, when you have implemented this system, how many people can I lay off?" One of the huge problems for large scale government projects is a lack of tangible cost benefits.

I must be too young and naive, I read that as rebranded so it isn't another delayed, overspent project.

    Surely just a technical wording...

"I can now inform you that the Department for Education (DfE) and RM Education Limited (RM) have decided to stop work on the School Performance Data Programme (SPDP) with immediate effect.

It had become apparent that the programme was going to experience some delays to delivery and with a significant IT transformation programme taking place within the Department, and other changes across Government, including a proposed Crown Hosting Service, it is clear that it is not the right time to progress with this work.

The Department remains committed to achieving the vision set out by the Data Transformation Programme. Iain Bell has joined the Department as Director of Data and Education Standards and will be taking over as SRO on Data Transformation and leading work over the coming months to assess the best approach for achieving the vision. Iain has offered to come and talk to your group to discuss his early thinking on the next steps and whether this meets your needs from Data Transformation; if you would like to take him up on this offer, please let me know.

As Data Exchange was reliant on some deliverables from SPDP, we are working through the implications for Data Exchange. This will be considered as part of the wider Data Transformation work Iain is leading on.

In the meantime, the DfE and RM have committed to working together to continue to deliver the school performance tables and associated services in partnership."
