2 and 3 site school federations - SIMS/ file access across xxGfL connections

we have 3 small primary schools that are now federated. They are not physically close for any private fibre runs. does anyone have any advice on perhaps having the local 'GfL open all ports between the three sites' /24 ranges and setting up a standard trust between them all for SIMS and document sharing?

Is it possible to speak to the Telco actually providing the gfl links and see if it is possible to rent some darkfibre between the sites and make, what virgin refers to as, a lan extension which is essentially a vlan on their network over which yours runs?

Got some prices on LAN extensions. BT where cheaper for us, plus if you order before the end of March no install fee.

Honestly it's a lot simpler if it's anything like our SWGFL literally been playing with this the other week.

As long as they're on the same grid connection, they can interoute data between the sites without opening any ports etc, as they just allow the vlans to interact with eachother at that level. So the schools can see eachothers vlan etc, but no-one else can.

Then setup a trust/whatever you want to setup.

Only downside is it's still limited by your normal net speed, but yeah

I think Steve21 is closest to the kind of setup I had visions of. The connections speeds are an issue at the moment, but not for too much longer. The bigger issue is my knowledge of VLANs :s

    thanks

There's nothing at all you need to do in terms of the VLANs. It's all configured at the grids end (again at aleast for SWGFL).

Our two sites have (fake) IPs 10.79.1.1 and 10.80.1.1, by default these VLANs (within the grid) can't talk to eachother, can't ping eachother etc etc. They just enabled cross VLAN communication, now they can ping/talk/connect etc. Setup connections boom!

Still no-one else can connect to those VLANs only the "authorised" schools etc.
